As we grow older, it’s sometimes a struggle to know what to wear to suit your ageing body and face – whilst still being chic and elegant.

Thankfully, celebrity stylist Lisa Talbot has revealed the seven fashion habits that stylish women refrain from once they’re over 50 – including wearing head-to-toe oversized pieces, restrictive clothes and dressing ‘too young’.

She told the Daily Mail: ‘Midlife women absolutely do not need to disappear into “safe fashion”.

‘The key is wearing pieces that feel modern, flattering and aligned with who you are now. Style should evolve with you, not limit you.

‘Confidence is always the most stylish thing a woman can wear. I encourage my clients to stop dressing based on outdated age rules and instead focus on proportion, quality, colour and how clothing makes them feel.

‘Women over 50 often know themselves far better than they did in their thirties, and that self-awareness translates beautifully into personal style. The goal isn’t to dress younger, it’s to dress with confidence and intention.’

Read on to discover Lisa’s dos and don’ts of dressing when you’re over 50…

Avoid head-to-toe oversized clothing

Wear instead: Relaxed tailoring with shape

The stylist explained: ‘Oversized dressing can quickly overwhelm the frame and hide shape completely.

‘Instead, chic women over 50 tend to balance softer silhouettes with structure, for example, a relaxed blazer with a straight-leg jean or a fluid trouser with a fitted knit.

‘This season’s relaxed tailoring trend works brilliantly for midlife women because it feels polished without trying too hard.

‘Examples that work well from the High Street are wide-leg tailored trousers, soft blazers, lightweight waistcoats and relaxed co-ords.’

Ditch the restrictive clothes

Wear instead: Elevated comfort

Lisa said: ‘One of the biggest style shifts after 50 is prioritising comfort without sacrificing style.

‘If something pulls, pinches or makes you feel self-conscious, you simply won’t wear it confidently.

‘Chic women understand that great style is about ease. Premium stretch denim, softer fabrics and fluid dresses can look incredibly sophisticated.

‘This season’s trends are barrel-leg jeans, soft denim, jersey midi dresses and linen blends.’

Don’t opt for over-complicated trends

Wear instead: Selective trend updates

‘Stylish women over 50 don’t tend to chase every trend. Instead, they update their wardrobe strategically with one or two modern pieces each season,’ explained the fashion expert.

‘A suede jacket, chocolate brown accessory or butter yellow knit can instantly modernise a wardrobe without feeling overwhelming.

‘Current wearable trends include suede jackets, butter yellow, chocolate brown, elegant sporty details, loafers and retro trainers.’

Avoid dressing ‘too young’

Wear instead: Your authentic style

‘There’s a difference between modern dressing and trying to recreate a 20-year-old’s wardrobe,’ warned Lisa.

‘Chic women over 50 know how to take inspiration from trends whilst adapting them to suit their lifestyle and personality.

‘For example, instead of micro-minis, they may choose a chic midi skirt or tailored short with a crisp shirt.’

Don’t just wear black

Wear instead: Softer neutrals and colour

The stylist said: ‘Many women fall into the trap of wearing black for safety, but softer tones often lift the complexion beautifully as we age.’

‘This season I’m encouraging clients to explore cream, camel, olive, navy, chocolate brown and softer pastels.

‘Colour near the face can make you look fresher, brighter and more energised.’

Stop keeping clothes ‘just in case’

Wear instead: A wardrobe that reflects your life now

Lisa explained: ‘Many women keep wardrobes full of pieces from previous versions of themselves.

‘Chic dressers regularly edit their wardrobe and focus on what works for their current lifestyle, body and confidence.

‘If you haven’t worn something in years and it no longer feels like you, it may be time to let it go.’

Don’t ignore accessories

Wear instead: Accessories to elevate basics

Lisa said: ‘The most stylish women understand that accessories create polish. A great belt, modern trainer, statement earring or structured handbag can completely transform simple outfits.

‘This season, metallic accessories, woven textures and elegant gold jewellery are an easy update from the high street.

‘At every age, style should feel enjoyable, not restrictive. The chicest women over 50 are usually the ones who know themselves well, wear clothes that support their lifestyle and choose pieces that make them feel confident when they walk into a room.’
