Arsenal star insists there is ‘no other option’ but to win title

Martin Zubimendi has warned Arsenal there is ‘no other option’ but to win their last two Premier League games to become champions — and insisted they ‘don’t care’ what their rivals do.

The Gunners face Burnley on Monday knowing a victory piles intense pressure on Manchester City, who would then hand Arsenal the title if they then fail to beat Bournemouth on Tuesday. That would end a 22-year trophy drought at the north London club.

Zubimendi said: ‘We are very clear that to win everything, we have to do our job. We depend on ourselves, so I don’t think we care what the others do. We are focused on ourselves.’

On the challenge ahead, which includes a Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest in two weeks’ time, he said: ‘We are looking forward to it, because in the end it has been a very long season and, well, we see that we are close, that we can do something big and be able to celebrate a possible feat. If we can do it then it is going to be an important moment for the fans.

‘Hopefully, London will be dressed in red and I think that because of everything I’ve experienced this year, I want to think it’s going to be a unique day.’

The Spaniard is aware of the pain fans and his team-mates have endured from finishing runners-up for three consecutive seasons, and is desperate to rectify this.

‘It would be incredible,’ he added.

‘It’s true that (I) haven’t felt (not winning the league) as much as the fans and the (other) players who have felt it over the years with that desire to win this title.

‘But, well, this year I think they have instilled in us all the desire and the expectation that there is in terms of that and those who have more experience here.’
