Pub sorry after allowing quizzers to use antisemitic jibe as team name

A pub in Yorkshire has apologised for allowing quizzers to use an anti-Semitic jibe about Golders Green as a team name.

‘Golders Green should be Golders Greed’ won The Crown at Boston Spa’s weekly quiz on May 4 – just days after two Jewish men were stabbed in the north London suburb.

They were allowed to use the ‘racist’ name throughout the evening without being challenged.

But now the pub’s manager has issued an apology for the ‘offence and distress’ it caused after a local complained.

‘The name should not have been accepted, and we take concerns about discrimination and inclusivity very seriously,’ the manager said.

The resident of the affluent village Boston Spa had told The Crown they were ‘ashamed’ to call it their local.

They said it was ‘outrageous’ and ‘racist towards innocent British Jews’ that the name was able to be used.

They wrote: ‘How was this allowed in our local pub? Which member of staff felt this insensitive and damaging team name was acceptable?

‘This type of public victimisation perpetuates ill feeling and alienation towards a minority group. To be blunt, it incites hatred.’

In his apology in response, the pub’s manager said ‘the significance and implications of the wording were not properly recognised’ and that they wanted all customers to feel safe and welcome.

The weekly pub quiz is held every Monday and costs £5 to enter with teams being given a free pizza.

The local who complained said it was ‘shameful’ a team was allowed to use the name and that ‘The Crown is clearly not an inclusive establishment’, reported The Telegraph.

It came just days after a knife attack in Golders Green on April 29  left two Jewish men – Moshe Shine, 76, and Shloime Rand, 34 – wounded.

A spokesperson for Campaign Against Antisemitism said: ‘This is plainly racist. It shows just how normalised racism against Jews has become in Britain.

‘This is not a performative protest or hate march or anonymous online abuse: it’s normal people doing normal things at the local pub, and casually incorporating anti-Semitism, and nobody bats an eyelid.

‘Everyone knows now that abusing Jews carries no consequences. Worse still, it has become cool. Not for the first time in history.’

The Crown had stood empty for nearly a decade before it reopened in 2021 after undergoing a £1.2million renovation.

The Daily Mail has contacted The Crown for comment.
