‘They worry about her and how she’s going to end up’

She was first introduced to the world almost 15 years ago: a delicate newborn nestled in her mother’s arms, her besotted older brothers surrounding her.

While she may look all grown up today, some things remain precisely the same for Harper Beckham; she’s rarely seen away from the protective embrace of her parents, David and Victoria.

And their influence is all too evident – Harper is said to be unfailingly polite, always smiley and, while impeccably groomed, has a very natural, ‘girl-next-door’ look.

Yet while she has undoubtedly bloomed under their watchful eye, there can be little doubt that being a teenage Beckham is a complicated proposition.

Take last week, when Harper joined her mother in New York for the launch of the fashion designer’s collaboration with High Street chain Gap.

It prompted questions across social media, about why Harper wasn’t back at school after the Easter holidays.

Three days later, she joined Victoria in the Big Apple once again, this time at the upmarket Nordstrom department store where the 52-year-old was promoting the Portofino ’97 Victoria Beckham Beauty perfume.

Sweet as it was to see a mother and teenage daughter so close, there was a certain enigma.

Why, one wonders, when the Beckhams are known to be dedicated parents, are they placing their young daughter centre of their latest PR campaigns?

One couldn’t help but recall their eldest son Brooklyn, 27, publicly lambasting them in January: ‘Brand Beckham comes first’ and ‘family “love” is decided by how much you post on social media, or how quickly you drop everything to show up and pose for a family photo op’.

As well as the New York excursions, this year the Beckhams were also criticised after Harper attended her mother’s fashion show in Paris during term time.

From the outside, Harper’s existence seems very far from the average teen life of homework, hobbies and sleepovers.

But I’m assured Harper is not missing out on any of her school tasks. Modern technology makes it infinitely easier for children to keep up while away from the classroom – and sources tell me the Beckhams, like other wealthy families who travel for work, make regular use of personal tutors to complement schooling.

I’m also told David and Victoria are firm parents who ‘want the best for their children’ and if that means having to put their foot down, then they will.

They also worry about Harper slightly more than her brothers. It’s hard being a young woman in the public eye, as Victoria can testify.

One friend of the Beckham family told me: ‘Of course they worry about her. There has been some chatter around the family that they once feared she would end up like Paris Hilton.

‘Harper was always going to be more stand-out than the boys. David and Victoria knew that from day one they had to protect her more than her brothers.’

Despite David and Victoria insisting they have brought their children up to be humble there¿s no escaping the fact that the family is worth near on £400million

Despite David and Victoria insisting they have brought their children up to be humble and work hard, and demanding privacy on some matters, there’s no escaping the fact that the family is worth near on £400million – in large part thanks to their dedicated commercial activities.

And just as the children of doctors are more likely to become medics themselves, it seems all the Beckham children are destined to become brands, too – destined for fame and fame alone.

Everybody I’ve met who knows the couple has told me they are fantastic parents.

They also say they are ‘stuck between a rock and a hard place’ – because, as one long-standing associate regularly reminds me, ‘The children can’t have proper jobs. How on earth can one of the boys be a mechanic, or get a job in the City even? It would be impossible. The public lens would be on them too much. You can imagine the stories, “Here’s Brooklyn lifting a car bonnet”. It simply cannot happen.

‘So then you end up with these children perhaps being a bit lost. Even if they wanted to do something normal, they can’t.’

There are already claims Harper will launch her own beauty brand later this year. HIKU by Harper is said to be Korean-inspired with the ‘glass-skin’ products Gen Z and Gen A are mad for.

There is also no question that Harper is extremely marketable, with a natural look that makes her relatable. Combined with an endearing personality and a wholesome image, Harper is surely on to a winner. This potential marketability will, undoubtedly, be something that ‘momager’ Victoria is well aware of.

‘It’s now about Beckham 2.0,’ says a family associate.

I saw for myself how adorable Harper was back in 2023 when she attended her father’s Netflix documentary premiere in London. She was allowed to take a small group of her school friends to the event and I watched as they giggled and put on their lip gloss in the ladies’ toilet.

But going from experimenting with lip gloss to launching your own beauty brand seems a rather steep trajectory for a 14-year-old.

I’m told that David and Victoria take the view that they will support all their children with their chosen career paths and simply block out the criticism.

If Harper is on the verge of her own product launch, she’s already had some practice in the spotlight. She was just 13 when she made her first official public appearance at Claridges’ Hotel in November 2024, for the Harpers Bazaar Women of the Year awards.

There, she presented her mother with the gong for entrepreneur of the year.

Back in October, I interviewed Victoria and we discussed at length how she is desperate to give Harper as normal an upbringing as she can.

Victoria also hailed her daughter as ‘smart’ and that she’s already ‘got a little entrepreneurial head on her shoulders’ – and even went so far as to describe her as a ‘little mini-me’.

She also openly discussed how she is only too aware of the pitfalls that accompany being in the public eye.

In her own Netflix documentary which she released last year, the former Spice Girl candidly spoke of how she’d suffered from an eating disorder.

During our conversation she passionately told me how she was adamant that her girl wouldn’t go through what she did. She said: ‘We’ve actually talked about food for quite some time, because the one thing that doesn’t seem to change is that little girls think a lot about food as they’re growing up, and when their bodies are changing and when they’re going through puberty.

‘And my wish for Harper is that she has a really healthy relationship with food, and that she eats healthily. We all want to treat ourselves as well, but it’s about balance.’

There can be zero doubt that Victoria dotes on her only daughter as much today as she did when she was born.

One can only hope that Project Harper, as some have dubbed it, will result in the balanced life Victoria so desires for her only daughter.
