Everyone makes same joke as Pope Francis accidentally blesses NFL team

The New Orleans Saints may have Pope Francis to thank for his blessing if their dreadful losing streak ends on Sunday.

On Friday, the Pope posted about the righteous lives of saints on X, writing: ‘The #Saints are formed by the Beatitudes: poor, meek, merciful, hungering and thirsting for justice, seeking peace. They are ‘filled with God’ and incapable of remaining indifferent to the needs of their neighbour. They bear witness to paths of light that we too can trod.’

While the leader of the Catholic church was obviously not referring to the NFL franchise in New Orleans, many fans twisted the post to take jabs at the 2-6 team.

‘Your Holiness, I have no #Saints on my roster,’ one user wrote. ‘Is this something I need to take to confession?’

‘Not to be that guy, but I’m not even sure your blessings are gonna help that team right now,’ a second added.

Pope Francis' tweet about Saints drew fans to make jokes about the struggling NFL team

‘He has to chuckle every time he uses that hashtag, like he knows we’re gonna talk about the football team that’s doing awful this year,’ a third chimed in.

‘Your Holiness, they are 2-6,’ said a fourth.

A fifth responded: ‘I know the #Saints disappoint you just like they do everyone else.’

After winning their first two games this season, the Saints have been on a six-game skid, sitting third in the NFC South.

The Saints will rematch the Panthers, who they steamrolled in Week 1, on The Lord’s Day, Nov. 3.

Fans responded, telling the Pope that his blessing could not help the saints out of their skid

After winning their first two games this season, the Saints have lost their last six outings

Should they come out with a win, it would not be the first time the Saints received the Pope’s blessing.

In 2019, Pope Francis tweeted about saints in the same manner before New Orleans took on the Jacksonville Jaguars, writing: ‘Today we give thanks to the Lord for our new #Saints. They walked by faith and now we invoke their intercession.’

Miraculously, the team secured the win without their starting quarterback Drew Brees.
