LAURA CRAIK’s fashion verdict on the stars who take the plunge

She recently dived back into acting after a five-year hiatus by starring alongside Timothee Chalamet in Marty Supreme.

But Gwyneth Paltrow took a different kind of plunge at The Actor Awards, with the 53-year-old wearing a revealing gown featuring a deep V neckline.

Paltrow’s full-skirted black lace gown for Sunday’s event was designed by Givenchy’s Sarah Burton – a favourite of the Princess of Wales during her tenure at Alexander McQueen.

While it may have been the most daringly low-cut gown she has worn in years, Paltrow is no stranger to the style.

In fact, the actress and wellbeing mogul has taken the plunge several times – so frequently it has become something of a signature.

In 2008, she wore a V-cut Stella McCartney jumpsuit at the Hollywood premiere of Iron Man, as well as a V-cut navy satin Chanel gown at Cannes Film Festival the year after.

Paltrow has revisited the style six times since, but none of the dresses were quite as revealing as her look on Sunday.

Another actress giving her best V-sign was Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, 23, who wore a cream silk Christian Cowan dress-cum-negligee with a plunging neckline.

Yet not all guests took the plunge.

The Substance star Demi Moore, 63, paired her new short hairstyle with a black strapless gown featuring a modest convex neckline by Schiaparelli couture.

Oscar-nominated Jessie Buckley wore a black strapless Balenciaga gown with a bodice in a similar convex style, while Emma Stone appeared in a glittering lilac Louis Vuitton slip dress.

With such a split, the gowns on show certainly brought new meaning to the phrase ‘when they go low, we go high’.
