Designer behind Zara Tindall’s 22 pairs of earrings

Jewellery brand Laurence Coste has risen to prominence since becoming a favourite of Zara Tindall.

The daughter of Princess Anne debuted a pair of the brand’s exquisite earrings at the Cheltenham Festival in 2020 and has remained a loyal devotee ever since – now owning no fewer than 22 designs.

Introduced to Laurence Coste by her stylist Annie Miall, Zara’s polished and confident sense of style aligns seamlessly with the brand’s bold, statement-making jewels.

Her recent outing at Royal Ascot was a case in point. Dressed in a monochrome ensemble by Laura Green, accessorised with a Juliette Botterill hat, Emmy London shoes, and Laurence Coste’s eye-catching Cosima earrings, Zara commanded attention and admiration alike.

‘I thought she looked absolument magnifique,’ founder Laurence tells the Daily Mail. ‘The moment I saw Zara’s outfit, it instantly brought to mind Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady – timeless, elegant and chic.

‘The Cosima earrings felt like the perfect finishing touch, and it made me so happy to see her pair such a graceful look with one of my signature designs.’

The ensemble was the result of a collaboration between Zara’s stylist Annie and Laurence Coste herself, who worked closely to curate the flawless look.

‘I had no doubt she would look incredible, especially knowing Annie Miall was behind her Ascot wardrobe. Annie and I worked closely together on this, and I find her incredibly inspiring and professional. It was a fabulous success, and we feel so proud when we look back at the pictures.’

The duo first connected ahead of Royal Ascot in 2024, when Zara selected Laurence Coste’s delicate Milly Rose earrings to complement her Anna Mason floral print dress.

‘We feel incredibly lucky to have had Annie, a good friend of our brand, introduce Zara to us for Royal Ascot 2024. We were thrilled that she loved our pieces and even more excited that she chose to return to us for more events,’ Laurence says.

‘Being represented by someone as elegant as Zara is truly flattering, and I’m sure it’s also inspiring for many of my customers.’

The Cosima earrings, worn by Zara on day three of Royal Ascot, are among Laurence Coste’s most sought-after designs thanks to their delicate Lalique effect and baroque pearl drop – which was given a striking update for the royal.

She explains: ‘The Cosima has been a timeless classic over the years. To complement Zara’s outfit, we gave the original design a subtle twist by adding gold-plated detailing to the baroque pearl, and Zara truly made them her own.’

For day four of Ascot, Laurence once again crafted something unique for Zara, revamping the Luna aquamarine earrings to complement her powder blue Veronica Beard suit. This bespoke iteration showcased a mother-of-pearl top with a faceted aquamarine drop, radiating understated sophistication.

‘We felt this soft, refined combination would not only complement her complexion and eye colour, but also make the outfit a winner,’ the designer reveals.

Laurence was so enamoured with these special editions that she chose to dedicate them to Zara herself, renaming them the Zara Cosima and Zara Luna earrings – now available both online and in-store.

While Zara has recently favoured pearl drops, her collection also includes four versions of the Colette earrings – floral designs embellished with crystals – in shades of bright red, burgundy, gold and rose gold.

Another standout choice in her jewellery repertoire is the Pipin earrings, a clustered design crafted from faceted beads, each hand-wired onto a silver-tone base for a sculptural, light-catching effect.

Born in Paris, Laurence moved to London in the 1980s, bringing with her a passion for jewellery inspired by style icon Loulou de la Falaise. She went on to study History of Art at Christie’s, an experience that proved instrumental in shaping the vision for her brand.

‘I design earrings and necklaces to be worn, not just admired,’ Laurence explains. ‘These are pieces that instantly boost your confidence the moment you put them on, adding personality and character to any outfit.’

Practicality is as important to her as beauty. With a lifestyle that moves between three boutiques, client meetings, evening engagements and family life, Laurence understands the need for designs that transition from day to evening.

‘I always need a pair of earrings I can wear effortlessly from morning to night – and I believe that’s what my clients look for, too. Versatility and comfort are what I keep in mind when I’m experimenting in the workshop.’

Working exclusively with semi-precious stones, Laurence draws inspiration from the colours, textures and natural harmony of the world around us, particularly the sea and marine life.

She compares her design process to cooking, noting that ‘to create something truly special, you need the finest ingredients.’ Her selection reflects this philosophy, incorporating gemstones such as amethyst and carnelian, alongside coloured Venetian glass, Swarovski crystal and freshwater pearls.

With a focus on quality, colour and character, Laurence has developed an extensive collection of gemstones, which she regularly ‘dives into’ for bespoke commissions.

Each piece is designed and handmade in Chelsea, with boutiques located on Brook Street, Walton Street and Sloane Street. These locations have quickly established themselves as destinations for clients seeking distinctive, original designs.

‘I always say we’re all many women in one, and I design with that in mind. I want women to feel confident, to play, to experiment, and to make each piece their own. I celebrate the accessory, and jewellery, and give it the spotlight it deserves, because it reflects a woman’s true personality,’ Laurence says.

‘Colour invites that kind of creativity, and I love how it encourages women to express every side of themselves.’

In addition to their bold aesthetic, the jewellery stands out for its adaptability. Most designs are available as both clip-ons and for pierced ears, an increasingly uncommon option.

Laurence describes this choice as ‘essential,’ ensuring her creations remain versatile and accessible without limiting individual preference.

‘Almost all of my earrings are designed to be convertible, and we usually adapt them for our clients within just a day, if not in real time,’ she explains. ‘It’s all about making sure every woman can enjoy beautiful, comfortable pieces that suit their lifestyle.’

Sustainability also lies at the core of the brand. Every stone and pearl is responsibly and ethically sourced from sustainable suppliers around the world.

Beyond design, Laurence ensures her work has a wider impact: a portion of proceeds supports charities dedicated to empowering women in disadvantaged circumstances globally.
