Wayne Rooney is reportedly being lined up for a shock move to non-league minnows Macclesfield just six months after being given the boot by Plymouth Argyle.

The Manchester United and England legend has been working as a pundit for Amazon Prime since he was axed on New Year’s Eve but could be set to replace Robbie Savage as Macclesfield head coach.

The former midfielder has been in charge of the Silkmen since last year, winning 40 of his 51 games in charge, and said it would need a ‘really special job’ to tempt him away.

But he has been heavily linked with the vacant Forest Green Rovers job after Steve Cotteril’s sacking.

Rooney is now in line to take over Savage’s role were he to depart, according to The Sun.

The ex-United and Everton star endured a miserable seven-month stint at Home Park, winning just five of his 25 games and leaving them languishing at the bottom of the Championship table.

Plymouth’s form greatly improved under Miron Muslic but the Pilgrims were condemned to relegation to League One.

It came after another dismal 83-day spell in charge of Birmingham that brought nine defeats in 15 games.

His first foray in management came at D.C. United, before he took charge of Derby in 2020.

A move to Macclesfield would allow the 39-year-old to remain at his Cheshire home alongside wife Coleen.

He had to grow accustomed to his wife’s absence during his spell at Plymouth, with his family living 260 miles away in Cheshire, while he stayed in a rented seaside flat.

England’s second highest goalscorer ever was often found frequenting local bars on his evenings off, with the stress of managing his side appearing to be overwhelming.

Rooney was once separated from his wife by 10,508 miles, as she took part in I'm A Celebrity

Rooney made headlines after footage emerged of the former England captain showing two strangers around his apartment in Plymouth following a night out.

While at Plymouth, Rooney was at one point separated from his wife by 10,508 miles, with Coleen taking part in last year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in Australia.

Meanwhile, Macclesfield, who were reformed in 2020 following their liquidation, will compete in the National League North, the sixth tier, next season.

They secured promotion from the Northern Premier League last season after accumulating 109 points, 26 more than their nearest title rivals.
