On the eve of the World Cup, the wives and girlfriends of England’s biggest football stars have already enjoyed a lavish build-up to the biggest footballing tournament on the planet – checking in at opulent five-star accommodation close to the Florida hotel where the squad has been based.
Tomorrow, ahead of the Three Lions’ opening match against Croatia under the searing Texan sun next Wednesday, the WAGs will follow the squad to their base in Kansas – residing in another luxurious bolthole.
Thomas Tuchel, as his predecessor Gareth Southgate did, has made it clear that support from England’s WAGs is vital to the squad’s chances of lifting the most coveted trophy in the game – if the team make it to the latter stages, many of the players’ glamorous other halves will have spent nearly two months across the Pond.
Roll the decades back to those heady days of 1966 when England actually got their hands on the gleaming Jules Rimet trophy and the role of the WAGs – then exclusively wives, with just one fiancée in the mix – could not have been more different.
Celebrations, following England’s nerve-jangling 4-2 victory over West Germany at Wembley on that historic Saturday night at July’s end, were entirely segregated.
The original, and reassuringly ordinary, WAGs – but the wives of England’s 1996 World Cup heroes existed in a different realm to the more entitled partners of today’s national squad. A photo taken in a chophouse restaurant at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington shows the wives of England’s history-makers, including Tina Moore and Judith Hurst, toasting their men.
The women cut elegant but understated figures, reflecting the still demure – but increasingly freer – fashions of the era, their hair was backcombed into the beehives that 1960s icons such as Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy and Brigitte Bardot had all made famous.
Yet there isn’t an England footballer in sight in the black-and-white image; the heroes of the hour had been whisked downstairs to a glittering reception hosted by the Football Association and Prime Minister Harold Wilson. For the wives, the message was clear – no player plus ones were allowed.
Nobby Stiles’ wife, Kay, then 24, and mother to a six-week-old son whom she’d left at home with family in Dublin, said afterwards that the ‘best day of our lives’ had been tempered by FA chauvinism.
Mrs Stiles revealed to the Daily Mail in 2016: ‘They allowed some women to the banquet, but not us. We had to sit by ourselves with some man from the FA. I still have no idea who he was.
‘If just one of us had been brave enough to say “this isn’t right”, we’d all have backed her up. But times were different then. No one wanted to be pushy.’
Later, token gifts – boxes containing pairs of commemorative scissors – were handed out to the wives and finally, at around midnight, the players were released from the reception and allowed to reunite with their partners.
Peak WAG? The class of 2006 saw the term ‘WAG’ officially enter the lexicon, with Victoria Beckham, right, Cheryl Tweedy, left, and Coleen Rooney, centre, stealing their footballer partners’ thunder from the stands at the Germany World Cup
A media circus followed the squad’s wives and girlfriends around Baden Baden Victoria Beckham, far left, Coleen Rooney, centre, and Elen Rivas, far right, were all part of the group of WAGs in the Black Forest town
Some 60 years on and England’s WAGs exist in an entirely different realm to their 1966 counterparts.
The latest generation of wives and girlfriends, including Harry Kane’s wife Katie Goodland, Jude Bellingham’s glamorous model partner Ashlyn Castro and Bukayo Saka’s fiancee Tolami Benson enjoy gilded lifestyles where designer clothes, private jets and luxury homes are entirely normal in their everyday lives.
However, their presence at this year’s tournament is still likely to be a reasonably low-key affair, having been privy to the pitfalls of WAG life by the infamous class of 2006.
That year, the upmarket German spa town of Baden-Baden became WAG Central when Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Tweedy, Elen Rivas, Coleen Rooney – then just 19, Abbey Clancy and Alex Gerrard sashayed into town, bringing a media circus with them.

They pouted and posed their way to England’s peak WAG era, with the crosses and corners on the pitch overshadowed by the showboating appearances – often allegedly orchestrated with waiting paparazzi – of the wives and girlfriends.
The term ‘WAG’ wasn’t even common parlance until Posh and Co descended on the Black Forest… but every England team since the 1950s has had one thing in common – a supportive cast of women behind them.
Here’s what being a wife or girlfriend to the stars of the nation’s football team has looked like through the decades:
1966: England
A dream day for the England players… but the wives of the nation’s history-makers didn’t travel to tournaments – and weren’t invited to the party after the famous victory

It’s been 60 years – of hurt – since England lifted the trophy that would make instant heroes of its squad. As yet, it’s a feat that has eluded every England team since.
The landscape for the players and their wives was entirely different – with more traditional societal roles ensuring the wives of star players such as Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Alan Ball were merely bit part players.
The Football Association even excluded them from the victory champagne reception at London’s Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington. They dined separately with their husbands coming up to collect them at around midnight.
Kathleen Peters, the wife of midfielder Martin Peters, told the Daily Mail in 2018: ‘We were overwhelmed and just sat in the hotel room, staring at his medal like two kids. We didn’t even drink champagne – I think I made us a cup of tea.’
One wife was absent, Jack Charlton’s wife Pat – who passed away aged 92 in 2022.
She watched the Final on a black-and-white TV in her modest semi-detached house in Leeds with her mother.
Bobby Charlton with his wife Norma; wives wouldn’t join their star player husbands at World Cups, unlike the WAGs at this year’s tournament
‘Of course we were very proud of them, but we were not involved like the wives and girlfriends are these days at all,’ she shared.
Pat, married to Jack for 60 years, remembered how he rang her about an hour after the match, and came home the next day – stopping at a transport cafe for a down-to-earth plate of egg and chips.
The separations while the tournament was on were hard, she said. ‘They would go off for two or three weeks before the World Cup and you wouldn’t see them.’
But that was the way England manager Alf Ramsey insisted that it should be. He didn’t want his players to have any contact with their wives – they were allowed phone calls and letters only.
Patricia Hunt, who was divorced from Roger in 1981, explained: ‘We had a very different relationship with the management. They kept the wives and families at a distance. We were definitely not involved or invited. Our role was not even considered.’
She seems astonished that one of this year’s players, Fabian Delph, returned from Russia to the UK to be with his wife for the birth of their third child.
‘If that had happened in Alf Ramsey’s day, he would have said: ‘Go home… and don’t come back after.’ It would not even have been considered a possibility.
‘Football is not just a game any more,’ said Pat. ‘The money they earn, the cars they drive, the mansions they live in and the lifestyles they lead are totally different from the way it was for us.’
This much is true – the England team were paid a tiny fraction of current wages.
Tina Moore, pictured at the hotel banquet in Kensington, reflected on the earnings of her husband Bobby in 2018, saying: ‘We didn’t have anything like their money, but we did have a wonderful life’
Martin Peters earned around £120 a week at Tottenham (the equivalent of £1,770).
Harry Kane, who played for the same club, was on £200,000 a week in 2018. Now he is estimated to be on £400,000 a week at Bayern Munich.
Pat added: ‘We were ordinary people. Your husband was playing a game of football, but it was no big fuss made. I would have hated to have been looked at and analysed and watched as the WAGs are, but now it’s all big money and celebrity.
‘Rebekah Vardy flies out with all the family on a private jet, then she’s on the telly on Loose Women and is out until 3am or 4am, and it’s all about publicity.
‘I suppose they do it and absolutely love it, and good luck to them, if they can handle it.’
Tina Moore, married to 1966 England captain Bobby until 1986, added: ‘We didn’t have anything like their money, but we did have a wonderful life.
‘Would I like to be a WAG today? I don’t know, to be honest. My husband was handsome and charismatic, but you never had too much concern [about predatory female rivals].
‘Nowadays it’s horrendous – women pursue footballers because they know that they could end up with a great lifestyle. I wish them luck with it.’
1970: Mexico

Four years on from lifting the trophy on home soil, expectation could not have been greater on the shoulders of England’s stars.
However, WAG-wise, the Mexican World Cup saw significantly less fanfare, with manager Alf once again cracking down on the players, insisting they should dedicate their time to the sport rather than treating the tournament like a holiday.
For this reason, time with their wives was limited and they still stayed largely out of the spotlight.

1982: Spain
In Spain some players brought their children as well as their wives. Left-back Kenny Sansom and his wife Elaine were among the famous couples of the era, along with Arsenal legend Graham Rix and his wife Gill. Glenn Hoddle was also supported by his wife Anne Stirling
Liverpool forward Kevin Keegan was also, during this era, often snapped alongside loyal wife Jean Woodhouse
After failing to qualify for two world cups in a year, spirits were high as the England squad made their way to Spain in 1982.
A carnival atmosphere consumed the players at Luton airport as they prepared to make the short trip to Spain for the inaugural tournament.
Ron Greenwood took charge of a squad that included names such as Terry Butcher, Glenn Hoddle, Trevor Brooking and Kevin Keegan.
But having topped their group in the first round, a three-way round robin saw them eliminated in a second round group including Germany and holders Spain.
And this time, some players didn’t just bring their wives – but also their children.

1986: Mexico
The England team strayed away from the spotlight during this era – although breakout striker Gary would get married to Michelle Cockayne later that year – but the France squad’s glamorous wives and girlfriends were often pictured supporting in the stands
While 1986 is remembered as a legendary time for the England team, with Gary Lineker winning the Golden Boot after scoring six goals, the tournament is best remembered for Diego Maradona’s unforgettable ‘Hand of God’ goal.
While she was not physically there in Mexico, Diego’s childhood sweetheart Claudia Villafañe – whom he married three years later – was watching the game from Naples, Italy, with their baby.

1990: Italy
Gary Lineker and his wife Michelle relaxed at the England’s World Cup base in Sardinia during Italia 90
Bryan Robson and his wife Denise even posed for photos on the beach while soaking up some sun
For many people of a certain vintage, Italia 90 remains one of the most thrilling tournaments England have ever been involved in – who could forget Paul Gasgoigne’s tears after he was booked in the semi-final against West Germany?
The star player’s realisation that he wouldn’t make the final if England made it ended up as one of the decade’s most recognisable moments. He might have saved his tears had he known the team would crash out on penalties.
England’s 1990 squad featured breakout stars including legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton, John Barnes, who would go on to be one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, and Bryan Robson – who eventually became Manchester United’s longest-serving captain.
And while press attention was certainly beginning to increase on the lives of footballers and their partners, it was far from the level we see today.
However, snaps from the tournament show Barnes and his wife Suzy sporting retro padded shoulder-adorned outfits as they arrive at their hotel alongside Peter and wife Sue Flitcroft.
Meanwhile, Bryan Robson and his wife Denise even posed for photos on the beach while soaking up some sun, while Gary Lineker and his then wife Michelle – mother to his four sons – also relaxed at the team’s base in Sardinia.
1998: France
Instead, France’s WAGs once again dominated the stands. However, even then, the WAG life was far from the level of luxury we see today.
There was no private jet or chauffeur – those who wanted to accompany their partners took the Eurostar at Waterloo International
England’s 1998 World Cup squad held the beginnings of a golden age of football for the country, with the likes of David Beckham, Michael Owen and Gary Neville on the team.
However, while Becks would tie the knot with Victoria Beckham that year, the legendary era of WAGs was yet to begin.

2002: South Korea and Japan
It is often thought that the term WAG was coined during the 2002 World Cup, hosted in South Korea and Japan.
The Telegraph at the time reported that the phrase was coined by staff at a Dubai Hotel where the wives and girlfriends of players had stayed.
2006: Germany
Perhaps more famous than the players themselves were their very glamorous wives and girlfriends – or WAGs – who made headline upon headline for their nights out and shopping sprees in the sleepy German town of Baden-Baden, where the World Cup was held that year

Victoria Beckham , Cheryl Cole and Coleen Rooney (pictured) were among the statement belt and designer shades-clad celebrities who were on hand to show support for their partners, who despite an all-star team were eliminated in the quarter-finals
It was the year Shakira‘s ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ was taking over club speakers, viewers were tuning into a nail-biting X-Factor final with a young Leona Lewis – and something called ‘Twitter‘ was the hot new website on the block.
But along with Britney Spears filing for divorce from K-Fed and David Tennant’s Doctor Who and Rose travelling to New Earth, British football was on a high with one of the most impressive FIFA World Cup England squads of all time.

Enraged public opinion even went so far as to blame the pack of stiletto-stomping, bronzed women with hair extensions on England’s loss, rather than a penalty shootout with Portugal – but they have come a long way since then.

The England WAGs spurned the start of a new level of superstardom for both footballers and their wives.
And in 2010, it could be seen across the globe too.

In 2022, the England team was supported by their proud partners, from Harry Kane’s wife Kate, to Jordan Pickford’s childhood sweetheart Megan Davison.
A slew of WAGs were reported to be staying on a £1billion cruise liner during the international football tournament, where they cheered on the Three Lions.
It was also reported the WAGs had been issued with a strict list of rules to follow while they were in Qatar, including a ban on public displays of affection, and an order to dress modestly when they attend matches.
Along with enjoying trips to the beach, the WAGs partied up a storm on the liner, with sources claiming they celebrated England’s 6-2 victory over Iran by racking up a £20,000 bill.
Jack Grealish’s model girlfriend Sasha Attwood and wife of England defender Harry Maguire, Fern, were among the group partying until 2am with £250 bottles of champagne on the MSC World Europa earlier in the week.
Taking to Instagram to showcase moments from their trip, Bukayo Saka’s then-girlfriend (now fiancée) Tolami Benson posed up a storm in a tiny green bikini for her followers while Conor Coady’s wife Amie shared a sweet photograph with her three children and her husband, sitting in the stands at an undisclosed stadium.
