Spring has arrived, bringing with it warmer temperatures and the inevitable mix of sunshine and showers.

Alongside cosy knitwear and light layers, a reliable umbrella is an essential addition to your new-season wardrobe.

When it comes to umbrellas, British heritage brand Fulton immediately springs to mind. Known for its longstanding relationship with the Royal Family, Fulton has become synonymous with quality, craftsmanship and timeless style.

Indeed, Fulton umbrellas became an iconic part of Queen Elizabeth II’s wardrobe, with the late monarch favouring custom-made Birdcage designs to perfectly match her outfits.

Her interest in the brand was inspired by her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, whose secretary contacted Fulton in 1988 in search of the clear domed umbrella the brand had pioneered.

Although the style had been discontinued due to low demand, Fulton quickly revived it to meet the royal’s request. This collaboration earned the brand a Royal Warrant from the Queen Mother, and later, in 2003, from Queen Elizabeth II herself.

Continuing this tradition, Queen Camilla is also known to favour Fulton’s transparent brollies for their combination of visibility, practicality and elegance.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, meanwhile opts for the brand’s walking umbrellas – as our experts discussed in this week’s episode of Palace Confidential.

The good news? These very designs are available to everyone. The classic Birdcage 1 model, available on Amazon, comes in a range of colours – including red, silver and black – to complement any outfit.

Its domed shape provides full coverage for head and shoulders, while the high-grade PVC canopy ensures clear visibility, even in the heaviest rain.

As a loyal fan of Fulton myself, I can personally vouch for their durability and reliable performance. I particularly love the automatic opening mechanism – an understated luxury on stormy days.

With styles available in an array of sizes and colours, they’re ideal for slipping into a handbag or tote, whatever the occasion.

Among my current favourites is the Morris & Co. Tiny 2 UV umbrella in Blackthorn, which combines two of my must-haves: a classic William Morris print and modern functionality.

This ultra-compact, flat design offers UPF50+ protection and features an aluminium and fibreglass frame – complete with a matching case.

Elsewhere, the Mayfair Walking Umbrella is a high-performance brolly with a lightweight frame, a smooth automatic opening and luxurious wooden handle.
