LIVE: Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan expected to lose seat

Baroness Eluned Morgan, the First Minister of Wales, is expected to lose her seat as crisis engulfs Labour following disastrous local election results across England, Wales and Scotland.

Baroness Morgan is poised become the most high-profile victim of Labour’s seismic defeat in the vote with sources claiming she has failed to retain her seat in Ceredigion Penfro.

Meanwhile, the Greens have added further misery to Labour by taking the Hackney mayoralty following losses to Reform and even the Conservatives.

Reform has taken control of Suffolk County Council after winning power in Essex, Havering and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Nigel Farage has boasted both Labour and the Conservatives face being ‘wiped out’ in the local election results marking what he described as a ‘historic shift’ in UK politics.

But Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to stand at the next election despite growing calls within his own party for him to resign.

Former Labour minister suggests Starmer ‘cannot lead us into another election’

Former transport secretary Louise Haigh has suggested Sir Keir Starmer should step down before the next general election.

Ms Haigh, who served in Sir Keir’s first cabinet, told ITV Sir Keir can’t lead the party into another vote unless ‘significant and urgent change is delivered’.

She told ITV Calendar:

He is doing an incredible job at the moment on the international stage in the middle of global instability and a war. And it is imperative that he is successful in that role because our constituents livelihoods are dependent upon it.

But I think what is abundantly clear, is that unless the government delivers significant and urgent change, then the prime minister cannot lead us into another election.

John Swinney has said it is clear the SNP will emerge as the largest party in the Scottish Parliament, as he was re-elected in his Perthshire North constituency.

He won with 16,414 votes, a majority of just over 6,000.

Giving his victory speech at the election count in Perth, he said:

I express my warmest thanks to my constituents who supported me so emphatically in this election today.
