Two babies shot in shooting rampage as gunman ‘kills his parents’

Two babies have been shot in a shooting rampage after a gunman allegedly killed his parents and wounded four others.

Local authorities said the shooting was reported at 11pm local time on Monday in the small town of El Ejido, near Almería, Spain.

A 25-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of killing his parents.

The suspect was said to have been briefly on the run before handing himself in at a local police station, according to Europa Press.

According to initial reports, the man killed two people – his own parents – and wounded four others, including two babies.

One is believed to be the suspect’s seven-month-old son, according to local media.

Sources from the Civil Guard told Europa Press that the baby is in critical condition.

It has also been reported that the second wounded child is an 18-month-old.

Local newspaper, The Ideal, said the 25-year-old suspect is currently being held in a health centre and ‘awaiting evaluation in the mental health unit’.

It also reported that the mother of the two children was injured in the attack and is currently hospitalised at the Poniente University Hospital.

A 60-year-old man of Moroccan origin is also believed to be among those injured in the attack.

The newspaper reported that he was transferred to the Torrecardenas University Hospital ‘with a gunshot wound to the head’.

Civil Guard officers, including members of the Rapid Action Group (GAR), the National Police, the Local Police and paramedics from 061 were called to the scene.

When officers arrived, they found a car with bullet holes parked on a street with a dead couple inside – believed to be the suspect’s parents.

Spanish authorities have not yet released the identities of the suspect and the victims.

The Civil Guard said it is now investigating the attack and attempting to establish a possible motive for the shooting.

Civilian firearm ownership is restricted in Spain, and the country consistently reports one of the lowest homicide rates in Europe.
