Faithful Matthew Hyndman has broken his silence after losing his place on The Traitors, admitting he made ‘several mistakes’ that cost him a spot in the final.
During Wednesday night’s instalment of the hit BBC show, Matthew was voted off during an explosive roundtable, leaving just seven players remaining.
Now, the Faithful has confessed that he mishandled the final stages of the game and should have gone all guns blazing against Stephen Libby, whom he suspected was a Traitor.
Speaking to The Sun, Matthew said: ‘There are a few mistakes that I made near the end, particularly at the final Round Table. I should have gone all guns blazing against Stephen.
‘I understood that by the Traitors giving James the dagger, they would have to vote for me because of the numbers for it to work.
‘James had obviously suspected me since day one, so when he got the dagger he was always going to vote for me, so I should have desperately tried to get to him and say, “Look, Stephen is a Traitor, he’s going to vote for me tonight.”
Matthew admitted he wished he had urged his fellow Faithfuls to listen to him just once, insisting they could banish him the following night if he turned out to be wrong.
He also revealed that he failed to properly convince James Baker that he was a Faithful, admitting he ‘didn’t even bother trying’.
The reality star added that if someone isn’t a fan of him, then he won’t beg them to be his friend. However, in the game of the Traitors, it has to be done.
Just last week, Matthew shocked viewers when he confronted the Traitors in the church confessional and issued an ultimatum, urging them to recruit him into the turret.
Now, he has revealed he was desperate to become a Traitor because he believed at the time that he could face murder if he wasn’t recruited.
He claimed he had a plan in place, explaining that if he had been recruited, he would have gone into breakfast and told the group he was ‘sitting on some information’, before hinting that Rachel was next on the Traitors’ recruitment list.
Despite his disappointment at being voted out so close to the final, Matthew said he was ‘really proud’ of how far he made it in the game.
Elsewhere in the episode, there was a dramatic twist as Traitors Rachel Duffy and Stephen were forced to hand the ceremonial dagger to a Faithful.
Whoever possessed the dagger got a double vote, and with the final only days away, it had the potential to change the game.
They gave the dagger to James, and as the Traitors had hoped, he went for Matthew and led the majority of the group in that direction.
After Matthew announced he was a Faithful, the remaining contestants became suspicious of each other. And with the final in touching distance, and a chance to win up to £120k, tensions began to rise.
While Traitors Rachel and Stephen have been getting away with murder, Faraaz Noor was finally onto them.
He said to Rachel: ‘I think it might be Jade or Stephen, and I think the other might be you. I think it was Traitor on Traitor with Fiona, and you’ve got rid of her. Listen, suspect all you want, throw everything at it.’
She calmly brushed it off, and jokingly said: ‘If I was a Traitor, I would have killed you on the first night.’
The episode ended with the Traitors deliberating their next move, which will be to murder either Faraaz or Roxy Wilson, and viewers will discover the outcome during Thursday’s episode.
It was tense in the Traitors turret, with both Rachel and Stephen on edge about the pact they made early on in the series.
While committing a murder in plain sight at the family tree, they promised not to betray one another or vote for each other at the roundtable, in the hopes of winning the series as a duo.
But in a game based on lies, deception, and psychological strategy, it is no wonder they were both on edge.
Stephen said to Rachel: ‘I just need to know now that we are going to make it to the end.’
She responded: ‘I’ve made one promise since I got here and I’ve told you I’m not breaking it. Please remember, no one can stick up for anyone at this point, and if you hear anyone repeat that I’m talking about you, it is because I have to to protect our alliance.’
But still left with doubts, Stephen then said to the camera: ‘Right now I’m worried. Maybe I’ve been blind because I have been actively not discussing Rachel if anyone brought her up.
‘She might not write my name on her slate, but that doesn’t stop her from sowing seeds of doubt against me.
‘If I did find out that she was going against me behind my back, then game on.’
