Spurs medical staff branded ‘clueless’ by some fans over Simons injury

The fallout of Xavi Simons’ season-ending knee injury has left many Tottenham fans furious with the club’s medical staff.

Simons injured his right knee during the second half of Spurs’ 1-0 win at Wolves when he fell awkwardly after planting his leg chasing a ball.

The 23-year-old was left in agony after suffering the injury, but briefly attempted to play on before ultimately dropping back to the pitch.

Simons was attended to by Tottenham medical staff with a stretcher called, with the creative midfielder eventually wheeled around the pitch after leaving the field.

His fate was confirmed on Monday morning when Tottenham revealed that he suffered a torn ACL.

However, before that news – many of the club’s fan base were already incensed in how Simons’ injury was first treated by medical staff.

While undergoing some tests on the touchline, Simons was seen going through some tests by the medical staff – including some jumps – to see the severity of his problem.

One angry Spurs supporter at Molineux took to X on Sunday to lambast the club’s ‘utterly clueless’ medical staff.

‘As witnessed yesterday yet again with @xavisimons, our medical team is utterly clueless. Asking him to run it off after being in obvious distress jeez.

‘I know they don’t have a scanner pitch side to see if there’s ligament damage, but you should know the signs as an expert as to when a player has to come off, even as a precaution.

‘We saw the same thing with Kulu [Dejan Kulusevski], [Rodrigo] Bentancur and [Radu] Dragusin doing squat jumps after they could barely stand up.

‘We now have 11 players out injured; it’s certainly no coincidence the club hierarchy, recruitment team, and medical team have failed us, handicapping any chance of progression, leaving us on the brink of relegation.

‘The fans will always be there supporting, though. #COYS.’

A Tottenham supported replied to this post, agreeing: ‘Yep. They did the same to [Lucas] Bergvall and worsened his injury.

Another questioned the whole process, writing: ‘I truly don’t understand why he continued. It was an insane decision. When it happened everyone could see how bad it was.’

Before Spurs’ official statement, Simons took to social media on Sunday night to express how ‘heartbroken’ he is by the injury.

‘They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way,’ he wrote. ‘My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense.

‘All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup. Representing my country this summer… just gone. It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best team-mate I can be. I have no doubt that together we’ll win this fight.

‘I’ll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there.’

As he left the Molineux turf on Saturday, the Netherlands international was embroiled in a fiery exchange with some Wolves fans who abused him as he was wheeled away.

Simons fired back at the home fans and was seen appearing to shout ‘f*** you’ multiple times towards one particularly vocal Wolves supporter.

The loss of Simons was a second injury blow of the match for Spurs, who had earlier seen Dominic Solanke limp off with a muscle problem.

Simons had been a key man for Roberto De Zerbi since the Italian’s arrival at the club and scored a stunning goal in the 2-2 draw with Brighton last weekend.

His absence will be felt as Spurs battle for survival in the Premier League. The victory at Wolves was not enough to lift them out of the drop zone after Callum Wilson scored a stoppage-time winner for West Ham against Everton.

Spurs remain in 18th, two points adrift of the Hammers with four games to play.
