Timothée Chalamet is facing heat after insinuating in a high-profile interview that women choosing not to have children is ‘bleak’.
As Vogue’s most recent cover star, the actor sat down with a reporter from the glossy fashion mag and talked about his booming career and social life.
But for many readers, one moment stuck out more than others.
The 29-year-old recounted watching an interview with a friend in which the subject was ‘bragging about not having kids and how much time it afforded them to do other stuff’.
He said his first thought was, ‘Like, holy s***. Oh my God. Bleak.’
The interviewer wrote that Chalamet ‘knows some people can’t have children or are never in a position to.’
‘But he does believe procreation is the reason we’re here.’
Chalamet, who has famously been dating Kylie Jenner, told Vogue that he may be interested in having children of his own someday.
‘That could be on the radar,’ he said in the interview, which was published days before an inside source revealed to that Daily Mail that he has ‘broken up with Kylie’.
The comments to Vogue from Chalamet, who is known for his large female fanbase, proved divisive for many.
‘Timothée Chalamet is making fun of people who chose to not have kids while turning 30 next month with no kids?? Getting a little behind buddy,’ wrote one critic on X.
‘You don’t want kids? For Timothée Chalamet that’s bleak. And to think his fans swore he was above a Kardashian hahaha,’ another said, referring to Jenner.
‘Timothée Chalamet can f*** right off. Why is it his or ANYONES business if someone has kids or not? I don’t have or want kids and I can assure you my life is not “bleak,”‘ a third chimed in.
‘Did Timothee Chalamet fr just say the reason people exist is to multiply exponentially on PUBLIC interview? What are we RABBITS??? and started DOGGING ON PEOPLE WITHOUT KIDS ?? WHERE IS THIS MAN’s PR TEAM GET HIM IN CHECK YO,’ another angry fan added.
The remarks come as and more women in the United States are choosing to go child-free.
According to CBS News, the average number of children an American woman will have during her lifetime has dropped to 1.6 and may continue to fall.
Many parents are marrying later and others are worried about their ability to afford a family.
Some believe that having children – especially multiple children – has become more of a luxury, per Vogue. The outlet reported that the average cost to raise a child is $310,000.
However, Chalamet’s comments on childbearing didn’t polarize all of his female fans.
‘Hopefully he’ll have children with me,’ one joked.
