Brooklyn Beckham’s ‘toe-curling’ breakfast sandwich video goes viral

Brooklyn Beckham’s ‘toe-curling’ breakfast sandwich video has gone viral, with the amateur chef being roasted on social media.

The eldest son of David and Victoria Beckham’s various career ventures have made a reappearance online this week after his explosive statement about his parents ‘controlling’ his life.

First his much-mocked photography book What I See surged in value – and now one of his morning TV cooking segments has resurfaced.

Back in 2021, then-21-year-old Brooklyn landed himself a slot on the Today show where he shared his ‘recipe’ for an English breakfast sandwich consisting of bacon, sausage and fried egg on untoasted white bread – a dish he said he ‘learned from his great-grandma’.

But the clip has gone viral again, with people branding the segment ‘toe-curling’ and one person saying: ‘This from a self-proclaimed chef is laughable.’

One moment in particular which unnerved viewers both at the time and now was when he broke the egg yolks with his fingers.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, social media users said: ‘This is toe-curling. We encourage a five-year-old when they’re pleased with themselves for making a basic sandwich. How did anyone think Brooklyn would look good for doing this?!’;

‘I was doing a fried breakfast on a Sunday for my family at age 10-with fried bread, not this dry, barely cooked cop out. This from a self-proclaimed chef is laughable. Would have a modicum of respect for him if he actually did the hard yards at something he really wanted to do,’;

‘Sorry this part killed me especially “place bacon on plate lined with paper towel” in the corner,’; ‘Breaking the egg yolk in the pan with his fingers was not giving chef,’;

‘It’s like they’re humouring a 5 year old,’; ‘One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. Can’t believe this happened,’;

‘Is this a wind up? The thing you make when you can’t be a**ed thinking about what you want…’;

‘Good grief- is there a 10 year old kid in this world who can’t make an egg and bacon sandwich with untoasted white bread?’;

‘Who’s old enough to remember when he refused to be called a TV chef because he actually spends time in the kitchen.’

During the cooking segment, Brooklyn explained that he developed a passion for cooking while in lockdown, during which he began posting videos of himself whipping up different dishes on Instagram, before running hosts Hoda Kotb and Carson Daly through his sandwich-making process.

But while the Today hosts were quick to praise his simple creation, viewers were up in arms over the decision to feature such an easy-to-assemble dish, with many branding the clip ’embarrassing’ and ‘painful’.

At the start of the segment, Brooklyn was seen telling viewers about dad David’s love of food, before waxing lyrical about his ‘favourite’ cast-iron skillet, which was already filled with pre-cooked sausages and bacon rashers.

He added that his love of cooking began to flourish during quarantine, when he began posting videos of himself making different dishes on his Instagram account.

‘I’ve always loved food and obviously when quarantine hit I just really started to get into it,’ he explained.

‘My fiancee (Nicola Peltz) started filming me and I started posting it and it’s just something I love doing.’

He shared several ‘tips’ during the preparation of the sandwich, revealing that he likes to cut his sausages down the middle so he can cook the insides, and explaining that he uses his fingers to poke the egg yolks so that they cook up and don’t stay runny.

Despite appearing on the programme to showcase his cooking skills, Brooklyn didn’t actually cook any of the meat for the sandwich, instead using pre-prepared bacon and sausages for the filling – although he did fry the eggs live on-air.

The two-and-a-half-minute-long segment concluded with Brooklyn stacking up his pre-prepared meat on a piece of unbuttered, untoasted white bread.

He then added the fried eggs, completing the dish with a very generous helping of ketchup and a second piece of bread.

It comes after his much-mocked wildlife photography book What I See saw a surge in its value with copies on sale for almost £300 amid bitter family row
One Ebay seller had listed the tome for a whopping £297.63 - when the original price was a much more palatable £17

In a post shared on the Today show website, Brooklyn further detailed his very simple process for recreating the English breakfast sandwich, explaining that the dish is incredibly special to him because it was passed down by his great-grandmother.

‘This was a dish I learned from my great-grandma, and I cherish it because it reminds me of my childhood,’ he wrote. ‘It’s a traditional English breakfast sandwich and I love making my American friends try this English staple.’

The resurfacing of the clip comes after Brooklyn’s much-mocked book What I See has seen a surge in its value with copies on sale for almost £300.

The £17 tome was derided when it was released nine years for its out-of-focus snaps and child-like captions, so much so that Brooklyn abandoned his career choice shortly after and became an aspiring chef.

It also only sold around 3,800 copies from June to October 2017 after it was panned by critics and dismissed as a vanity project.

In one picture, readers can only see the corners of Brooklyn’s shoes as he teeters over the edge of a 16-storey high building to take a bird’s eye picture of the view below.

Next to the black and white shot, he wrote: ‘Don’t try this at home. My parents were so angry when they saw this. Cool shot though.’
