Men hate these unflattering date-night outfits – wear this instead

Date-night dressing should be exciting, but more often than not it ends up causing a headache. We fall back on the same old staples – leather trousers, cutesy tops and cropped jackets – pieces that feel reliable, but can leave us looking a little stuck in the 2010s.

When it comes to date night, the goal is to feel your sexiest, and that often comes down to choosing cuts and fabrics that actually flatter. The good news? There’s no need for a full wardrobe overhaul. A few simple swaps can instantly update your evening looks and make them feel far more current.

Keep scrolling for the five date-night pieces to retire – and exactly what to wear instead.

Tight leather trousers

Leather leggings were once considered the go-to, easy-but-sexy date night option. But being honest, they’re so tight and clingy, they’re unflattering even if you have legs like pipe cleaners. Instead of smoothing out ‘softer’ areas, the shiny, stretchy material seems to highlight every curve, and when styled with heels and a dressy top, the suction effect on your legs leaves you looking top – and ultimately waist – heavy.

For a 2026 update, opt for studded jeans instead. Relaxed denim still provides cinching at the waist, while wider-leg fits are much more flattering for most figures. They also provide more interest to your outfit, meaning you can simply style with a white or black vest for a laidback-yet-cool look.

Off-the-shoulder tops

Is there anything more unattractive than sitting across from someone in an off-the-shoulder top, while they keep tugging at their misbehaving sleeves? They never sit right, either riding up and making it look as if your garment is trying to strangle you, or falling down and nearly revealing your bra. They’re also unflattering: they tend to cut straight across the upper arm, adding width to your shoulders and bust and creating a boxy, masculine effect.

A one-shoulder top is a less fussy, more flattering alternative. The asymmetry draws the eye up, while the slant across the neckline makes you look narrower and slimmer. It shows enough skin to feel sexy enough for date night, but you’re not gauchely showing off your assets, so you still look classy and considered. Pair with tailored trousers or jeans and honestly, you’re always onto a winner.

Cropped leather jackets

How many of us are guilty of chucking a cropped leather jacket over any outfit? My guess is loads. But honestly, it’s not a good look: the short length often cuts you off right at your narrowest point which throws off proportions, especially over dresses or higher-waisted trousers. They’re also quite stiff and fitted, which can make an outfit feel a bit rigid.

A relaxed linen blazer, on the other hand, is perfect for the breezier vibe that’s currently in vogue. It falls longer on the body, ending at a more flattering length, and skims rather than clings. The lighter fabric keeps it from feeling heavy, and worn open it gives that easy, slightly undone finish that looks far more current for date night.

Fitted skirts

Fitted pencil skirts feel like the obvious date-night choice – they’re dressy and, as per popular belief, ‘sexy’ – but they’re exceptionally unforgiving. The tight, straight cut leaves very little room to move, and often ends up clinging to your body in a way that highlights every slight wobble. There’s also something quite formal about them now: particularly when paired with heels, you can end up looking like a contestant on The Apprentice

What to wear instead? A slip skirt. Because of how they’re cut, they skim over the body instead of holding it in place, which doesn’t highlight any areas of concern. It moves when you walk, catches the light beautifully and feels less ‘trying to be sexy’ and more naturally so. Style it simply with a light knitted vest or a tee, and it looks modern and effortless, rather than stuffy and businesslike.

High heels

If you’ve been to any smart do recently, you’ll have realised our infatuation with skyscraper heels is well and truly over. They tend to dominate an outfit rather than complement it, make your feet look bulky, and ultimately make you look like you’re trying way too hard. Then there’s the practical element: they’re not exactly made for an easy, relaxed evening.

Instead, fashionable women are opting for kitten heels. Lower, lighter and more wearable, they elongate the leg in a softer way and work with everything from jeans to dresses without overpowering the look. You can also walk in them, and let’s face it: no man finds a tottering woman attractive.
