The Pitt fans stunned to learn breakout star’s dad is Bryan Cranston

Fans of The Pitt are surprised to find out that breakout star Taylor Dearden is the daughter of Bryan Cranston.

Dearden, 32, stars as Dr. Melissa ‘Mel’ King alongside Noah Wyle on the award-winning hit HBO medical drama.

And many were surprised to find out that she is the daughter of the 70-year-old Malcolm In The Middle actor.

‘Whaaaat? I was today years old when I learned this. And I call myself a Pitt fan [laughing while crying emoji],’ one fan wrote on a Pubity post on Instagram.

Another said: ‘She’s my very favorite on the Pitt. Now I know where she gets her great acting skills from. Even better [heart eyes and four applause emojis]’

Others were flabbergasted that Dearden did not use her father’s last name professionally.

However, Dearden has made that decision to establish an independent acting career and avoid associations with nepotism regarding her famous father.

Cranston has been married to Robin Dearden since 1989 and The Pitt actress has chosen to use her surname professionally. She is their only child.

Cranston has been asked about his daughter’s star-making role on a few occasions and has been every bit the proud dad every time.

‘There is nothing that’s more gratifying than when your kid receives praise. Nothing.

‘No one can say anything to me that’s better than that. Her mom and I are just over the moon with her work on it.’ Cranston told the Associated Press at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2025.

Cranston continued to praise his rising star daughter.

He said: ‘She’s a very hard-working person. She grew up in it, so it’s in her bones.

‘She’s in it for the right reasons and she loves it.’

Others were flabbergasted that Dearden did not use her father's last name professionally

Taylor made her acting debut as a ‘Sad Faced Girl’ on an episode of her father’s hit TV series, though she has made her own way ever since.

After starring in a few short films, she played McKenzie on the web series 10 Ways to Get Rejected, along with Sweet/Vicious and Netflix’s American Vandal.

She has more recently had roles in a pair of Apple TV Plus projects – For All Mankind and The Last Thing She Told Me.

Meanwhile, Taylor revealed in an interview with Gold Derby in May 2025 that it was, ‘really trippy,’ to still be filming The Pitt while it was airing, a rarity for most streaming shows.

‘We’d get texts from people saying like ah that one thing that happened and I’m like still at work going, ‘No I just did something else.’

Her character is neurodivergent second-year resident, and the actress herself is neurodivergent, adding it always ‘bugged’ her the way these characters are often portrayed.

‘There is a show that will not be mentioned that I saw and I was like wow they’re really trying to play autism there in a very unflattering light,’ Dearden added.

‘It’s just I think what’s frustrating is it is this idea of robots as opposed to humans and people who have a lot of things going on and yeah I mean it tends to be very one note and I’m I’m hoping that I’m doing a good job,’ she said.
