Team GB’s Super Sunday! Britain win ANOTHER gold medal

Tabby Stoecker and Matt Weston picked up Team GB’s second gold medal of a super Sunday at the Winter Olympics in the mixed team skeleton event.

In an stunning run, Weston – who won his second gold of the Games – overturned a 0.30 second deficit after he and Stoecker were languishing in fourth place.

His time of 58.59 seconds was a track record and ensured the pair, who were ranked top seeds for the event, won by 0.17 seconds.

They edged out their German rivals Susanne Kehrer and Axel Jungk, who took silver – and Jacqueline Pfeifer and Christopher Grotheer, who took bronze.

Freya Tarbit and Marcus Wyatt narrowly missed out on bronze for Team GB by an agonising 0.01 seconds.

Speaking on the BBC’s coverage of the event after Weston’s exploits, two-time Olympic bobsledder John Jackson said: ‘That was absolutely immaculate! He has been the cream of the crop of anybody on this track.

Their stunning victory by 0.17 seconds sparked wild scenes at the Cortina Sliding Centre

‘This is history. This is the first time GB have won three gold medals at a winter games.

‘He just keeps raising the bar to new standards, and that was absolutely nail-biting stuff when Tabby didn’t quite give the run she wanted to give him a chance.

‘Matt Weston absolutely destroyed the field, and a lot of that was done in the first 50 meters.

‘He is the first Brit to win two gold medals. What an amazing achievement.’

Their victory ensured Team GB won three gold medals at a single Winter Olympics for the first time after Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale triumphed in the snowboard cross mixed team earlier on Sunday.

Weston had also won gold in the men’s skeleton event on Friday.
