Spencer Matthews is set to undergo one of TV’s most extreme psychological experiments – to find out if he really is a psychopath.
The Daily Mail can exclusively reveal the former Made In Chelsea star, 37, will front a one-off Channel 4 documentary that puts his personality to the ultimate test.
The father-of-three volunteered for the film after friends and family suggested he showed ‘psychopathic traits.’
But as he dives into the science behind the label, Spencer hopes to challenge perceptions, asking whether there is such a thing as a ‘good psychopath.’
His wife, TV presenter Vogue Williams, 39, once admitted she thought he was a ‘sociopath’ when they first met on reality show The Jump in 2017.
Even podcast host Spencer has confessed he sometimes ‘suspects’ he’s a psychopath because of what he calls his ‘lack of empathy for others.’
A TV insider said: ‘This is a unique experiment, nothing like it has ever been seen on television.
‘Spencer loves to push the boundaries and, given his personal interest in the subject, he felt he was the perfect guinea pig.
‘He’s prepared to show huge vulnerability to discover whether he really could be diagnosed as a psychopath.’
Spencer is no stranger to emotional documentaries.
In 2023, he fronted Finding Michael for Disney+, chronicling his mission to recover the body of his brother Michael Matthews, who disappeared on Mount Everest in 1999.
He’s also gearing up to film Seven in Seven, an epic endurance challenge that will see him complete seven Ironman triathlons on seven continents.
Last year, Spencer earned a Guinness World Record after running 30 marathons in 30 consecutive days across the Jordanian desert – the most marathon distances ever completed on sand in a single month.
Speaking about his latest documentary, titled Spencer Matthews: Am I a Psychopath, the TV star said: ‘I have long been fascinated by psychopathy in part because I and others have questioned if I might carry psychopathic traits, therefore I was compelled to discover more.
‘I hope this journey – both personal and scientific – will allow a deeper understanding of the complexities of the condition and the ways it manifests in human behaviour.’
Former lothario Spencer, who married Vogue in 2018, has long suspected he may have the condition due to the fact he lacks empathy.
In 2017, the reality star took part in All 4’s Celebrity Psych Test, alongside former Made In Chelsea co-star Jamie Laing, and spoke openly about his fear of being a psychopath.
He said: ‘It’s not a very nice thing to not have empathy.
‘I would like to have empathy. If I’m chatting to someone who’s an anxious wreck and I don’t understand it, because I’ve never been anxious, then it’s strange.
‘There’s no real way of talking to them about it without saying I’ve no idea what you’re talking about. I’m better than you.’
After the pair were analysed for various personality traits including emotional stability, friendliness, and whether they were attention seekers, Spencer said: ‘I suspect I’ll probably come out of this being told that I’m a psychopath.’
Spencer and Jamie sat down on Spencer’s Untapped podcast to finally address their feud, which began when Jamie didn’t invite him to his wedding.
The snub at Jamie’s London ceremony to wife Sophie Habboo drove a wedge between the former close pals.
They finally buried the hatchet on the podcast, where they also discussed their Made In Chelsea days, an era Spencer does not look back on fondly.
He explained: ‘The portrayal of myself is slightly shameful. I’m not sure I’d want my son to be like that. I don’t think I admire any traits of Spencer from Made In Chelsea.
‘I don’t find myself that funny or entertaining, I looked drunk. I’m not proud of the work.’
