Spencer Matthews says he wasn’t invited to Jamie’s Ultra Marathon

Spencer Matthews has claimed he wasn’t invited to Jamie Laing’s Ultra Marathon Challenge as they revealed the truth about what really happened with their rumoured fallout on Wednesday.

Jamie, 36, completed his challenge of running 150 miles over five days in March, which raised more than £2 million for Comic Relief.

The Radio 1 DJ had been joined by his friends and family, with the likes of Made In Chelsea co-star Oliver Proudlock, The Traitors winner Leanne Quigley and Radio 1’s Greg James surprising him on his gruelling route from London to Salford.

Fans were surprised by the absence of fellow runner Spencer, which added further fuel to the claims that the childhood friends were no longer that close.

But now, Spencer, 37, who completed 30 marathons in 30 days across the Jordanian desert last year, revealed on his Untapped podcast that he, in fact, ‘wasn’t invited’.

Addressing the headlines about their friendship, the former Made In Chelsea star said: ‘Your challenge, for the record, was a really beautiful thing to watch. I didn’t snub your challenge at all.

He continued: ‘I know that you’re not expecting soppy posts from me either because I don’t ever do those.

‘I felt that it was all a bit jagged and just not true or fair. I congratulated you at the end of your challenge.’

He further clarified: ‘It kind of was like almost not enough where I wasn’t there, and I didn’t come to support you. There’s a reason I wasn’t there, I wasn’t invited.’

Jamie disagreed, saying that everyone who came to congratulate him at the end of the finish line wasn’t invited.

He said: ‘If you look at the flip side of it, right, everyone who came weren’t invited.’ To which Spencer replied: ‘Well, of course they were.’

Jamie responded: ‘No, no, they weren’t, people just turn up at the finish line. I didn’t invite them.’

Spencer proceeded to argue that the BBC must have invited people to surprise him at the finish line.

However, Jamie insisted he had no idea that certain people were coming and was so concentrated on completing his challenge that it was the only thing he was thinking about at the time.

He said: ‘I was so in the thick of running and in so much pain, and just so out of it because I hadn’t trained enough, I just didn’t train that much.

‘I was only thinking about getting up the next day and being able to run, that was the only thing I was thinking about.

‘Things were organised by, I reckon, the BBC. When Ollie Proudlock turned up, I had no idea he was turning up, that was a complete surprise.’

Spencer replied: ‘But obviously the BBC invited him. Like, you don’t just turn up to Manchester and hope to bump into you guys.

‘Had I come to support you, I wouldn’t have just driven to Manchester and hoped to see you. It doesn’t really work like that, like obviously there would be some communication with the BBC.’

Agreeing with Spencer’s logic, Jamie replied: ‘At the finish line, loads of people did turn up, but I also totally get you and I weren’t as friendly at the time.

‘So, in our relationship here, if I wasn’t as friendly with you and you weren’t as friendly with me, then why would you turn up? We weren’t talking as much.’

Earlier this year, it was reported that tensions had been brewing between the pair since 2023, after Spencer admitted he was ‘p****d off’ when Jamie snubbed him from his wedding to Made In Chelsea co-star Sophie Habboo, 30.

While Spencer had attended Jamie and Sophie’s June wedding celebration in Spain, fans were surprised to see he wasn’t present at the legal ceremony two months prior – an intimate affair at Chelsea Registry Office – instead heading on a family holiday to Portugal.

After fans expressed their shock, Spencer used his podcast with Vogue at the time to set the record straight, revealing he hadn’t actually been invited and admitting he was ‘p****d off’ by the snub.

He explained: ‘I’m being hammered for ‘snubbing’ my best friend’s wedding to go on holiday, and then posting about my holiday. I’m not here to b***h about my best friend, but there’s been some serious miscommunication from him.

‘I just want to set the record straight, more than anything. I’m not here to whinge. I was not invited to this part of Jamie’s wedding, and neither was Vogue.’

He added that he was ‘p***ed off’ he didn’t receive an invite, because he would have ‘flown to Japan’ in order to attend.

Vogue then added: ‘Sophie looked absolutely magnificent, we were absolutely thrilled for them, but we also did not know it was happening because we were not invited.’

After fans expressed their shock at the snub, the two couples then had a candid conversation about the ‘miscommunication’ on Jamie and Sophie’s NearlyWeds podcast – with the groom admitting he ‘f***ed up’.

During the honest chat, Vogue admitted that in all her years of knowing Spencer, she had never seen her partner so upset over the mix-up and the criticism directed towards him afterwards.

‘He was very upset, I have to be honest, I’ve never seen him like that,’ Vogue said. ‘He was genuinely upset over something, and then it was getting worse and worse because I saw the personalised stuff. And I thought ‘Oh s*** you really thought about this’.’

Jamie took full responsibility for the oversight, saying: ‘I f****d up. We had our wedding, our civil ceremony in the UK. It was a hectic process.

‘Amongst the hectic-ness of getting people there and things like that, I thought Spencer and Vogue were away.

‘Spencer got upset – which is fair enough. So I sent Vogue a message hoping to get a bit of support, and then she replied, ‘To be honest, Jamie, it’s not good.’ And I was like ‘f***’.’

Jamie then explained that Sophie asked if Spencer and Vogue were coming to their special day, to which Jamie explained that he failed to send them an invite because he knew they would be in Portugal on their family holiday.

Spencer said: ‘To be honest, Jamie, like you’re my best friend in the world. Which is why I think it hurt so much.

‘Like if it was anyone else. For your wedding – I would fly three times around the world to come to it because I care about you so much.’
