Rupert Everett, 67, ‘ruined’ himself in pursuit of the perfect body

Rupert Everett has said he has ‘ruined’ himself in pursuit of the perfect body in his younger years.

The My Best Friend’s Wedding star, 67, has confessed he hit the gym hard back in the 1980s and 1990s as he attempted to achieve a sculpted physique but he couldn’t ‘be bothered’ with making sure he lifted weights safely and he’s now paying the price.

‘I ruined myself. Now I’m almost crippled as a result’, he told the Guardian.

‘I could never be bothered to do all those things, like stretching, which were necessary for lifting weights, because your tendons get tighter and tighter.

‘So boring. I didn’t do any of that. So now my demise will be musculoskeletal, I think.’

He went on to confess that before he took up weightlifting, he took an easier route, and used to wear a specially-made bodysuit under his clothes to make him look more buff.

Rupert added that he wore the custom suit even when he was working:

‘I met these two queens in Tufnell Park [north London] who made bodysuits, and they made me a false bottom, false calves, false shoulders, false everything … Yes [I wore them], in everything,’ he confessed.

When asked if his directors knew about the bodysuit, he replied: ‘No! I’d go into the fittings for the costumes with all my things on.’

Rupert has previously admitted he focused too much on emulating Hollywood action men like Tom Cruise in the early years of his career.

The star admitted he regrets now not focusing on his stage career early on, instead he was fixated on the big screen stars like Tom.

‘I should have probably concentrated harder on the stage,’ he told the Daily Mail in 2024.

‘I was always trying to turn myself into the conventional Hollywood star I wanted to be when I was a kid.’

He continued: ‘I wanted to be Tom Cruise! But I was a 6ft 5in beanpole looking like a cross between Snow White and Anne Frank.’

‘So there was no way I was going to be able to compress myself into that role. It’s not that I was doing nothing, but I was doing everything in the wrong direction.’

Nowadays the star says he ‘never looks in the mirror if I can help it.’
