Man United boss Amorim is at ‘BREAKING POINT’, claims Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has claimed that Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is at ‘breaking point’ following his side’s Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby.

There is much speculation about Amorim’s future at Old Trafford after United were beaten on penalties by the League Two side.

Amorim criticised his players after the game, which Rooney suggests is a major concern.

United legend Rooney also indicated that Amorim has found it difficult to adapt to being the manager of such a high profile club.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Rooney said: ‘It was difficult to watch, I did feel there were a lot of positives in the Arsenal game, first game of the season, and then Fulham was a disappointment in the performance and then to go to Grimsby and lose in the cup with a lot of the starting eleven involved in the game, the best players involved in the game. Just the way they lost, it was disheartening.

‘There’s something not right. I think that’s clear. I think the manager said that after the game and I think that’s clear for everyone to see that there’s something not right there.

‘Even though it’s only three games into the season it’s getting to a point where it’s like, what is going on?’.

‘That’s the biggest concern. The manager’s words after the game were damning on the players. If your manager comes out with those words there’s something broken.

‘I think we forget he’s 40, he’s a young manager. Manchester United is so different to where he’s been before. There’s the media team, the commercial team, the fans, it’s completely different. There’s a pressure with Manchester United which he will never have felt before. When you’re not winning games that starts to get to you. It looks like this was a breaking point for him.’

After the game Amorim apologised to United supporters and admitted ‘we should do so much better’.

‘I just have to say sorry to our fans,’ said Amorim. ‘The way we started the game, we were not even here. When everything is so important in our club, everything that happened, it’s a problem in our club, we should do so much better.

‘In the penalties, the feeling is the same. I think football was really fair today – the best team won.

‘It should be my job to understand what happened. Again, I’m really sorry for our fans.

‘The support that they have given me, always with all of the defeats they always help the team. Today I have nothing to say. I am really sorry. It’s too much sometimes.’

There has been much speculation about Amorim's future following the defeat to Grimsby

United finished in 15th place in the Premier League last season, with Amorim struggling to improve the team’s fortunes following his appointment in November.

Although United reached the Europa League final last season they ended up being beaten by Tottenham.

In total Amorim has won only 35.56 per cent of his matches as United manager.

Amorim will be eager to see a response from his side when they return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home game against Burnley.
