Robin Wright turns 60! Inside her new life in the English countryside

  • Have YOU got a story? Email tips@dailymail.co.uk

She has lived a life in the spotlight for over four decades, ever since she first gained prominence in the eighties.

And Robin Wright, now 60, lives a blissful life in the English countryside with her architect boyfriend Henry Smith, 52, after ditching ‘s**tshow’ America for good.

The actress is among the Hollywood stars who have escaped the hustle and bustle of the States for a rambling country estate in the Chilterns.

‘I love being in this country. There’s a freedom of self here. People are so kind’, Robin told of her new quiet life.

‘They’re living. They’re not in the car in traffic, panicked on a phone call, eating a sandwich. That’s most of America. Everything’s rush, competition and speed.’

Her ideal morning begins with listening to the birds chirping outside her sprawling home before taking her dogs out for a walk.

For Robin, the breaking point was waking up to her LA neighbours’ home renovations: ‘Everyone’s building a huge house and I’m just done with all that – I love the quiet. And I’ve met my person. Finally.’

Other high-profile stars that have recently relocated to the UK from the US include Ryan Gosling, his wife Eva Mendes and the designer Tom Ford.

For Robin, who turned 60 on Wednesday, entering a new decade was not something that bothered her after finally meeting the love of her life.

‘I don’t see it as the end of an era. It’s just another number that’s a little bit bigger. It hasn’t shifted me in any way because I feel like I did that shift when I was 50, where I said, “I’m going to do it my way”, she added to The Sunday Times.

The thrice-divorcee met her British-born Australian boyfriend in a Chilterns pub not far from the latest Airbnb she rented with her stepsister, Lucinda Carmichael.

The loved-up couple, who quickly bonded during their five-month COVID-19 battles, plan to move to a rented home in the English seaside with labradors Rusty and Rocky.

‘It’s liberating to be done. Be done with searching, looking and getting 60 percent of what you wanted,’ Robin explained.

‘That’s exactly what I wanted. I’m turning 60 and I’m, like, “Is this it?” I love being alone and I’ve done that many times. But I’m, like, I want to grow old with somebody, and travel and see the world.’

Could you ditch the fast pace for a slower life?

What’s your view?

The Pour Les Femmes co-designer said it was ‘so relaxing’ to be ‘seen and loved for who I am’ but getting married a fourth time is absolutely out of the question: ‘No. God no. Why? That’s just unnecessary.’

Robin filed for divorce from her third husband – Saint Laurent VIP relations manager Clement Giraudet – in 2022 after nearly four years of marriage.

She has two children – daughter Dylan, 34, and son Hopper, 32 – from her on/off 13-year marriage to second ex-husband Sean Penn, which ended in 2010.

Sean and Robin have a history of splitting up and getting back together. The exes started dating in 1989 and were wed from 1996 to 2010.

They wed in 1996, then planned on divorcing in December 2007 but called it off four months later.

They separated again in April 2009, but withdrew the documents the following month; however, Robin filed the divorce documents in August 2009 and their divorce was finalised in July 2010.

The Golden Globe winner was also previously married to her Santa Barbara castmate Dane Witherspoon, but they ended their two-year marriage in 1988.

Before meeting Henry, Robin always believed someone was out there for her despite her divorces.

Speaking to AARP, she said: ‘I’m such a romantic. You can go through tumultuous, distressing relationships, but we rebound, don’t we? Our hearts rebound with a belief that it’s still there and it can be achieved and how wonderful when it comes again.

‘I don’t want to worry anymore. I don’t want to doubt, I don’t want to suspect. I don’t want all those things that we did in our 20s.

‘I can’t imagine feeling again what I felt then, which was jealous, suspicious. You grow out of it like you grow out of a pair of pants.’

Robin has starred in celebrated films including Forrest Gump, The Princess Bride and Wonder Woman, and won a Golden Globe for her performance as Claire Underwood in House of Cards.

Speaking about her health and fitness as she approaches her sixties, Robin said she was in the ‘best shape of her life’ in her fifties while filming Wonder Woman.

‘We all trained weeks before we started shooting every day of the week’, she explained. ‘We went to weight training, and the diet was insane.

‘We had to ingest like 3,500 calories of food a day, so you’re constantly doing smoothies in between your three meals. We had martial arts training and horse training, being able to ride a horse and pull a bow and arrow. It was full on.

‘I was in the best shape of my life, and I turned 50 on that movie. I was like, god – I’ll never be in that kind of shape again. It was amazing.’
