Prince Harry was left laughing – and slightly red-faced – after being mocked about his memoir and life in the US during an appearance on comedian Hasan Minhaj’s show.
The Duke of Sussex joined the American joker on his latest episode of Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know, where the pair discussed everything from mental health and fatherhood to Harry’s growing American habits.
At one point, Minhaj poked fun at a passage from Harry’s memoir Spare, where the prince revealed that his father, then-Prince Charles, gave him an ‘official clothing allowance’ – but only for formal wear.
Reading aloud from the book, Minhaj said: ‘Each year I received from Pa an official clothing allowance, but that was strictly for formal wear. Suits and ties, ceremonial outfits.
‘For my everyday casual looks I’d go to T.K. Maxx, the discount store. I was particular fond of their once-a-year sale, when they’d be flush with items from Gap or J.Crew, items that had just gone out of season or were slightly damaged.‘
The comedian then joked with him, quipping: ‘Bro, I’m sorry you had to go through that.’
Harry, grinning, replied: ‘You know what, it was hard, it was really hard. TK Maxx is now a special place in my memory.’
While also touching on more serious subjects, when asked about whether he was going to become a US citizen, the Prince refused to rule it out saying: ‘There are no plans to be, at this point’.
During a round of rapid fire Royal questions, Harry was asked what his kids thought he did to which all he could say was that ‘they know I help other people’.
The duke also showed off his sense of humour when Minhaj challenged him to show just how ‘American’ he’s become, prompting Harry to demonstrate a playful ‘yeehaw!’ and try out an American accent.
He comically recited lines like ‘I ordered breadsticks with ranch dressing at Applebee’s’ and ‘do you like my cybertruck?’
Harry admitted that the ‘most American’ thing he does is surf, but laughed that he has ‘chicken legs’ and prefers not to wear shorts.
At one point, the prince even joked that he would ‘knight’ Minhaj if there happened to be a sword handy.
Beyond the jokes, the conversation turned serious as Harry discussed his concerns about social media and its impact on young men.
He said: ‘Social media is taking young men and young boys into very dark places, which should concern all of us.’
The 41-year-old revealed that he and Meghan have ‘had our fair share of beatings on social media’ and said the couple’s move to California had given them a chance to focus on causes they truly cared about.
‘When we moved to America, we could focus on things really aligned to our passions – and the tech industry wasn’t one of those,’ Harry said.
‘But what we were in search of was what is the root cause of so much suffering and pain around the world, and if we can identify that, how can we shine a light on that and the people trying to change the industry, and it was the tech industry and social media.
‘We talk about it a lot and I think, because of what we know, now we will be way more cautious and hesitant of allowing our kids to have access to social media, but the problem is that so many parents don’t have that awareness.
‘Our goal has to be to make sure that when our children get to that age, that the situation now is not the situation then.
‘The more parents that know what is happening, the more parents can protect their kids.
‘People look to governments to protect them, yet we have this lawlessness within this particular industry.’
As fathers of young children, the Prince and host discussed the harmful effects of social media on kids, as well as the Duke’s work with The Parents’ Network, supporting families who have experienced harm because of social media.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have long been outspoken about the dangers of online platforms, both for adults and children.
They are also known for fiercely protecting the privacy of their own kids, Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, rarely showing their faces in public.
But earlier this month, Meghan delighted fans by sharing a Halloween-themed video on Instagram showing the family enjoying a day out at a pumpkin patch before heading home to carve decorations.
Royal watchers were quick to notice a fleeting glimpse of Archie and Lilibet’s faces – the first in three years – as the Sussexes enjoyed some rare downtime together.
In a timelapse, sped-up clip of Prince Harry carving a pumpkin, Meghan, Archie and Lili could be seen playing around in the background.
The footage captured a rare glimpse of Archie and Lili with their heads turned towards the camera.
Though the pictures were blurry, it is the first time a photo of Lili’s face has been shared publicly since 2022, when an official portrait was released for her birthday.
Archie’s face has not been shown in a photo since the Sussexes’ Christmas card in 2021.
