Pictured: Teenage girl, 16, killed in minivan crash near school

A 16-year-old who died in a minibus crash has been named as a Grammar School student from Sherburn.

Eleanor Hague, known as Ellie, died when the white Mercedes Sprinter minibus she was in collided with a Hyundai i10 in Tadcaster on Monday.

She was one of nine passengers, aged 16 to 18, from Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School, which both share a sixth form. 

The minibus had been heading along Toulston Lane towards Sherburn when the Hyundai entered the road from Rudgate and the vehicles collided at around 12.28pm. 

Emergency services attended, but Ellie sadly died at the scene. Her family are being supported by specially trained police officers, North Yorkshire Police said.

Another teenage girl was taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The other passengers, and the man driving the minibus, have received treatment at hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 40-year-old woman from Leeds, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

She has since been released on conditional bail after being interviewed by police.

North Yorkshire Police said in a statement: ‘We are continuing to appeal for any witnesses or motorists with relevant dashcam footage to come forward as soon as possible.
