Man, 80, charged with tying up, strangling and trying to rob woman, 95

An 80-year-old man has appeared in court today accused of tying up, strangling and trying to rob a 95-year-old woman after he asked her about bin collections.

Edwin Morrison, who turns 81 next month, allegedly attacked the vulnerable victim and then demanded her purse in her own home in Manchester on Tuesday.

The elderly suspect had allegedly knocked on the door to ask about what day the bins were collected.

Police say he forced his way into the unnamed woman’s property, tied her hands together, and demanded cash as well as her purse.

But he was disturbed by a friend of the woman. The second woman was allegedly attacked during the incident.

The suspect fled and police were called to the address in Salford.

Morrison of Worsley was arrested the following day and has now been charged with a number of violent offences.

He appeared in the dock at Salford and Manchester Magistrates’ Court this afternoon where he was accused of two counts of false imprisonment and one of attempted robbery.

Morrison is also charged with intentional strangulation and common assault.

He struggled to follow proceedings while wearing a hearing aid in the dock and spoke only to confirm his name and address. No pleas were entered.

Magistrates remanded Morrison in custody and he’ll next appear at Manchester Crown Court on March 3.
