With Movember in full swing, men up and down the country will currently be sporting an impressive moustache.
And it could be worth keeping once the month is up – as single women have voted it the sexiest facial hair style.
A new survey of 2,500 UK women found that seven in 10 prefer a man with facial hair over one with a sculpted torso.
The outlaw moustache, as seen on Hollywood heartthrob Pedro Pascal, took the top spot with more than a fifth of votes.
Meanwhile the clean-shaven look is officially out of fashion, ranking a dismal nine out of 10.
‘The days of the six-pack being the ultimate turn-on are fading fast,’ Sylvia Linzalone, dating expert from Wisp, said.
‘Facial hair gives a man instant character – it suggests confidence, maturity, and a bit of mystery. Women are craving authenticity over aesthetics.’
So, do you agree with the findings?
Coming in second place was the Tom Selleck-style chevron moustache, which received 19 per cent of votes, while stubble came in third at 16 per cent.
A full beard and a neatly-trimmed goatee completed the top five, scoring 13 per cent and nine per cent respectively.
Lower down the rankings the handlebar moustache – famously sported by Hulk Hogan – only received seven per cent of the votes.
Meanwhile the thin pencil moustache received even less, with six per cent.
The anchor beard – worn by Robert Downey Jr’s character Iron Man – came eighth in the rankings.
Once popular, the clean-shaven look only received a measly three per cent of votes.
And finally mutton chops – the beard style that Hugh Jackman wears in his X-men movies, came in last with just one per cent.
‘What this survey shows is that attraction isn’t about perfection – it’s about personality,’ Ms Linzalone added.
‘A moustache tells a story. It shows individuality, and that’s what women are responding to.
‘They’re choosing character over push-ups.’
In the last century the popularity of moustaches has fluctuated, with significant periods of prevalence in the 1920s and 30s and the 1970s and 80s.
In recent years, however, they have become popular again – particularly among hipsters.
Movember – an international charity event where men grow moustaches during the month of November to raise funds for men’s health issues – has also raised their fashionableness.
