Moment determined woodpecker named Rambo attacks Ring camera

This is the moment a determined woodpecker broke a Ring camera after spending 15 minutes attacking it.

Stephen Brough, 71, was surprised to see the bird pecking the Stick Up Cam outside his home in Tonbridge, Kent, when he tuned into the livestream recently.

He has since affectionately named the red-headed woodpecker Rambo, likely after the violent soldier played by US star Sylvester Stallone.

Footage of the adorable moment shows Rambo posing for a close up as he relentlessly pecks away at the camera – before it eventually breaks.

‘He was attacking for approximately 10-15 minutes before he finally broke it,’ Mr Brough said.

‘I didn’t think woodpeckers would be interested in anything other than a tree!’

He added that Rambo was far more persistent than any spider, wasp or moth that flocks to the lights of his high-mounted Ring cameras.

Stephen admitted he was initially upset, stating that the camera ‘is really useful for seeing if I have visitors or deliveries.’

After 15 minutes pecking away at the camera - the bird eventually managed to break it

Ring provided Stephen with a new camera to replace the one lost to the bird’s antics, ensuring he can continue keeping an eye on his home.

According to The Wildlife Trust, Rambo’s distinctive red head means that he is a ‘great spotted woodpecker’, often mistaken for their rare relative, the ‘lesser spotted woodpecker’.

In comparison to other types of woodpeckers the great spotted are the best drummers by a long way, being able to beat their beaks against hollow branches or tree trunks at a stunning 40 hits per second.

Its larger, stronger bill, the strong black line leading onto the chest, and the white shoulder patch, amongst other features, all reveal it to be a great spot.
