It’s the first Monday in May – and that means it’s fashion’s biggest night of the year, with a star–studded guest list including Sam Smith, Sabrina Carpenter, Misty Copeland and Lena Dunham.
Of course, there are some seriously memorable fashion fails tonight as A–list stars descend upon the red carpet during the gala.
This year’s dress code is ‘fashion is art,’ which will serve as a more specific baseline for guests against the gala’s overall theme of ‘costume art.’
The New York City museum will pair historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute for the exhibition, which will be loosely divided into three categories: the classical body and the nude body, aging bodies and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body.
This year’s gala marks the first in Anna Wintour’s new role as Vogue’s global creative director and chief content officer for Conde Nast, with Chloe Malle taking over as head of editorial content for US Vogue.
Tonight’s guests include A–list stars from the Kardashians to Rihanna and even Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton, as well as sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.

Looking like a quill pen! Artist Sam Smith wore a black bedazzled outfit that featured an overzied, dramatic cape top lined with fur and a mermaid-style, bottom-hugging hem. They paired the look with a large matching headpiece that included two extremely tall black feathers
Red hot wrong! Lena Dunham arrived in a custom, red sequined and feathered Valentino gown that is inspired by by Artemisia Gentileschi’s Judith Slaying Holofernes painting, according to Vogue. She paired the look with the brand’s signuature rockstud heels in bright red, and wore minimal jewelry
Poor color choice! Vogue’s new head of editorial content, Chloe Malle, wore a Creamsicle-orange colored chiffon dress custom designed for her by New York designer Colleen Allen that missed the mark when it came to the theme. She paired the dress with a bubble necklace by Fred Leighton jewelry, and wore her hair in Old-Hollywood style curls
Tassels gone wrong! Emma Chamberlain wore a very dramatic, over-the-top Mugler gown that resembled paint and brush strokes on the body and into the ruffled hem. The sleeves featured long tassels and shredded detailing that continued into the train of her gown. She completed the look with a super dark smokey eye and a dark nude lip
Playing it safe! Met Gala co-chair Venus Williams wore a curve-hugging, black Swarovski crystal gown with a dramatic silver necklace draped over the top. She wore her hair in a high bun decorated with crystals to match the dress, as well as a few earrings
Looks like he traveled back in time! Ben Platt wore a suit that was reminiscent of a children’s outfit, as he sported an blue-and-green ombre suit adorned with clouds, trees, and a woman holding an umbrella. He paired the look with chunky, white satin loafers, as his pants appeared to be a bit too short
Way too much going on! ABC journalist Deborah Roberts, who is married to Al Roker, arrived in a busy, multicolored, polka-dot gown with a dramatic bubble skirt. The dress featured a thick belt at the waist and a corset-style top, which she completed with a pair of large dangling earrings
Model Grace Ann Nader, who is the sister of Sports Illustrated star Brooks Nader, looked like she was going to any other Hollywood party instead of the Met Gala on Monday night.
