Man Utd’s £39m-bound Ederson is called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad

Manchester United fans will get to witness what incoming signing Ederson is all about earlier than planned after he was called up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.

Ederson will officially become a Manchester United player in July when he joins in a £39million transfer from Italian side Atalanta.

He was set to have a free summer preparing for his move to England but his plans have changed with his focus now on events in Canada, Mexico and the United States.

On Sunday, the 26-year-old was called up by Brazil boss Carlo Ancelotti as an injury replacement for their World Cup squad after defender Wesley was ruled out.

The right back sustained a left thigh injury during the first half of their 2-1 friendly win over Egypt on Saturday in Cleveland.

‘The MRI scan revealed a muscle injury to the adductor muscle in his left thigh,’ the Brazilian Football Confederation said in a statement.

‘The CBF regrets the injury. Wesley is a player much loved by the squad and will always be considered part of this team as it seeks to win its sixth World Cup title.’

Brazil begin their World Cup campaign on June 13 when they face Morocco (11pm BST) in Group C before taking on Haiti (June 20 – 1.30am BST) and Scotland (June 24 – 11pm BST).

When he does join Manchester United after the World Cup, Ederson will sign a four-year contract with the Red Devils as head coach Michael Carrick begins to overhaul their midfield.

The deal, which was finalised on Tuesday afternoon, will see United pay an initial £34m fee to Atalanta, with the rest in add-ons.

United have been keen to conclude a transfer for Ederson early and had a delegation in Italy to conduct discussions not only for the 26-year-old but also other potential signings, as per our Man United transfer briefing article. It came to a conclusion after Atalanta appointed Cristiano Giuntoli as their sporting director last week.

United want at least two midfielders this summer and a forward as well as competition at full back and goalkeeper.
