Man United consider surprise move for Premier League goalkeeper

Manchester United are considering a surprise move for Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as they seek a replacement for Altay Bayindir, while Wolves’ Sam Johnstone is also on their radar.

Darlow is currently out of contract after spending last season as Leeds United’s No 1, helping the club retain their Premier League status.

The 35-year-old qualifies as a homegrown player, which is viewed positively for a potential second-choice goalkeeper role at Old Trafford. However, he is also attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Johnstone, another homegrown option who came through Manchester United’s academy, is also on the shortlist.

He served as deputy at relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers last season, although he missed the latter part of the campaign due to a shoulder injury.

United are aiming to shift on both Bayindir and Andre Onana, with neither currently seen as part of the club’s plans.

Daily Mail Sport previously reported that Onana’s £120,000-a-week salary and extrovert personality would make it difficult to leave him on the bench.

Meanwhile, Senne Lammens has established himself as United’s first-choice goalkeeper after making his debut in October 2025, following an £18 million move last summer.

The club are also keen to keep Radek Vitek, who impressed during a loan spell at Bristol City last season, though the Czech goalkeeper is eager for regular playing time.

Tom Heaton has recently agreed new terms to remain at Old Trafford as third-choice goalkeeper.

Despite their interest in Darlow and Johnstone, signing a backup goalkeeper is not a top priority for United, with the primary focus on bolstering at left-back and strengthening in midfield for their Champions League return.
