A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was allegedly attacked near a busy city centre street on Saturday morning.
Police responded to a report that a woman was raped in an alleyway off The Tything in Worcester.
Detectives believe the alleged incident happened between 6am and 8.30am.
The 23-year-old suspect was held on suspicion of rape and remained in police custody on Sunday afternoon.
West Mercia Police said it will increase officer patrols around the area, knowing the incident will ‘bring great concern to the community’.
A force spokesperson said: ‘An investigation has been launched following a report that a woman was raped in Worcester yesterday morning.
‘It is believed the incident happened between 6am and 8.30am in an alleyway on The Tything.
‘A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.’

Police are now appealing for information that could with the investigation.
Detective Inspector Lisa Tibbits said: ‘I know an incident like this will bring great concern to the community.
‘I would like to reassure the public that a thorough investigation is now ongoing.
‘I am appealing to anybody who may have any information that would help with our enquiries, however insignificant you feel it may be, to please contact the police.
‘As part of our investigation we have a man in custody, who is helping us with enquiries.
‘There will be an increased police presence in the area as we carry out enquiries and specially trained officers are supporting the victim.’
