Hugo Ekitike films himself on his phone driving £200,000 Mercedes

Liverpool star Hugo Ekitike has been caught using his phone while driving – after he filmed himself behind the wheel of his £200,000 Mercedes and posted the video on Snapchat.

In the clip, the French striker, 23, who only joined the Premier League club this summer, can be seen showing off the sports car’s orange and black dashboard.

He is driving his Mercedes G Wagon down a single carriageway at the time and is following a red car.

Ekitike, who played at Anfield against Arsenal on Sunday, then flips the camera around twice to show his face.

The video was subsequently uploaded onto his Snapchat account.

In the UK, it is against the law to hold or use a mobile phone while behind the wheel of a car or motorbike.

The law continues to apply when drivers are stopped at traffic lights or are stuck in queuing traffic.

Anyone caught falling foul of the law can be landed with six points on their licence and a £200 fine.

The Daily Mail has contacted Liverpool FC and Merseyside Police for comment.

Ekitike has hit the ground running since his £79million move from Eintracht Frankfurt this summer with two goals in his opening two Premier League appearances.

He previously hailed his new team-mates, adding: ‘I enjoy playing with them.

‘Outside of the pitch they are good guys. We have some little things to fix, on the ball.

‘I have things I can do better. I am going to enjoy playing with them for the season.’

Ekitike’s video comes after his team-mate Mohamed Salah was reported to police for using a mobile phone while driving in 2018.

Footage posted online appeared to show Salah using his phone at the wheel of his Mercedes after a win against West Ham.

Liverpool FC later confirmed they had alerted the police after discussions with Salah.

The video – which was posted on Facebook – showed Salah with his phone in his hand, and later after moving his car further forward, with both hands on the phone as he sits in traffic.

A Liverpool spokesman previously said with regard to the video of Salah: ‘The club, after discussion with the player, have made Merseyside Police aware of the footage and the circumstances surrounding its capture.

‘We have spoken to the player also and will deal with any follow-up internally. Neither the club or player will be making any further comment on this matter.’

Merseyside Police added: ‘We have been made aware of a video believed to show a footballer using a mobile phone whilst driving.

‘This has been passed to the relevant department.’
