Each time they make a joint appearance, the Prince and Princess of Wales are poised, present, and completely focused on their duty.
However, Prince William and Catherine, both 43, have been known to share romantic moments, when they can sneak them, away from the glare of the cameras.
Royal biographer Gyles Brandreth called them ‘fleeting signals of mutual support’ when he watched the then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during a royal outing in 2012.
Writing in Prince Philip’s biography, Mr Brandreth noted that William and Catherine’s attention was ‘always on the people immediately in front of them’.
‘Not once did either of them play to the camera – or even acknowledge them,’ he continued. ‘Occasionally, Prince William put out a hand to touch his wife’s fingers or elbow or shoulder, and she reciprocated with a smile.
‘You would have only noticed these fleeting signals of mutual support if you had been on the lookout for them – which I was.’
Royal fans have also picked up on these signals, which add another layer to their fairytale romance that began 23 years ago.
Flirty glances, coy smiles, a gentle brush of the hand, or a reassuring pat on the back – Britain’s future King and Queen have always effortlessly communicated their love and support for each other without words.
And last month, Prince William left social media users swooning after he was captured kissing his wife’s hand when they attended the Royal Variety Performance in London.
The sweet moment occurred just before William and Catherine stepped out of their chauffeured car to walk the red carpet – but it’s not the first time the royal couple have stolen a private moment during a public outing.
In fact, when they embarked on their first international royal tour as a married couple, royal watchers couldn’t get enough of their crackling chemistry.
On their final day in Canada, the cowboy-hatted Prince and Princess stopped by the annual Calgary Stampede rodeo, where they were invited to open the festival by pressing a red buzzer.
As the crowds erupted in cheers, William and Catherine allowed their hands to linger over the buzzer for just a second longer while watching the spectacle unfold.
Less than a year after welcoming their firstborn, Prince George, William and Catherine joined Prince Harry as they flew to Scotland for the Commonwealth Games.
For their first appearance, the trio headed to the Tollcross Swimming Centre in Glasgow for the 800m freestyle event, where they cheered for now-retired Welsh champion Jazz Carlin as she clinched the gold medal.
William and Catherine were also at their lighthearted best; at one point, the heir to the throne fanned Kate with her identity card as temperatures in Glasgow soared.
In a quieter moment, however, they were seen gently holding hands as they watched the race intently.
Catherine, later, placed a hand on her husband’s leg as seen in a now-famous photo of the pair that left fans swooning over their royal love story.
The then-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge looked equally smitten with each other when they visited India and Bhutan for a seven-day tour in April 2016.
However, body language expert Robin Kermode noted their mutual attraction and affection manifested in more subtle behaviours such as mirroring, prolonged eye contact, open smiles, and leaning in towards each other.
At the time, Mr Kermode also noticed the couple shared a ‘very private moment in a public situation’ during a wildlife safari.
A photo of their visit to the Kaziranga National Park in the northeastern state of Assam showed Catherine smiling at her husband while he held a hand to his face.
Mr Kermode said it felt as if they were completely ‘unaware of the world around them and time stands still’ for William and Catherine when they are together.
He also highlighted how Britain’s future King and Queen painted a ‘wonderfully genuine picture of young love’ on their visit to the subcontinent.
‘They appear to be in a world of their own, holding eye contact, subconsciously sharing a moment together,’ he said.
Although Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have frequently been caught in tender moments together, the Prince and Princess of Wales were known to be more reserved about their relationship.
But their love was undeniable when they were seen holding hands in a quiet moment of gratitude during the wedding of Princess Eugenie inside St George’s Chapel at Windsor in 2018.
Onlookers noted that William had also placed a hand on the small of Kate’s back as they entered the chapel together on October 12.
By the time they left for their royal tour of the Bahamas in 2022, Catherine and William’s ‘flirty signals’ were well established – head-tilt gazes, excited smiles, and prolonged eye contact.
The following year, they looked more loved-up than ever when they walked the BAFTA red carpet in London as the mother-of-three famously gave her husband a gentle tap on the behind.
The couple looked to be exchanging a few words, before she leaned across and appeared to give his behind a soft tap in a rare moment of PDA for the duo, who seemed relaxed and overjoyed to be attending the glamorous annual event.
Body language expert Judi James suggested that the couple’s affectionate moments ‘made this look like their most loved-up appearance together to date’ – before the Waleses released Catherine’s cancer recovery video last September.
According to Ms James, the deeply personal film, that was shot in Norfolk, marked a turning point for the couple as she noted the ‘true depth of their adoration and love’ was plain for everyone to see.
‘The body language in this video tells us all we need to know about Kate’s recovery – and more. Since their engagement Kate and William have always been very careful and very sparing with their PDAs,’ Ms James said.
‘Suddenly though, we are shown the true depth of their adoration and love for each other in some simple but immensely touching scenes in this video.’
As Catherine began a ‘measured’ return to public life, William’s affectionate gestures turned into something much more profound – as he was always ready to offer his wife a steadying hand or an encouraging smile during public engagements.
A photograph of them at the deeply emotional Holocaust Memorial Service in January captured the prince and princess with their heads slightly bowed towards each other in a ‘natural’ heart-shaped image as they lit candles at Guildhall.
Ms James told the Daily Mail: ‘This moment from William and Catherine is both rare and compelling as they illustrate their quiet, mutual love for each other while combining it with very appropriate signals for the memorial they are attending of external loss, reflection and mourning.
‘Their heads are bowed together with foreheads almost touching and this signals respect for the memorial as well as a more personal and very tender form of love between them.
‘It’s a very gentle gesture and seems symbolic of the way they always tend to both take care of and protect each other. It actually makes them form the shape of a heart but in a natural and non-performative way.’
She also highlighted their ‘constant and subliminal mirroring’ – including their near-identical facial expressions, with the downward gaze and a part-smile.
‘”Like-bodied” means “like-minded” and William and Catherine have displayed this trait of postural echoing since they first appeared together in public,’ Ms James continued.
By the time, they travelled to Wales earlier this year, Catherine and William looked ‘more loved-up than ever’ as Ms James said their chemistry ‘almost made it impossible not to smile’ when you watched them.
This was certainly the case when royal fans watched William bend down to air kiss his wife’s hand at the Royal Variety Performance in London on November 19.
The performance marked the sixth time William and Kate have attended the show together, and the princess’s first since she announced she was in remission from cancer.
Catherine was radiant as she walked the red carpet with her husband of 14 years, before William put his hand on the small of her back in a gesture of unwavering support.
