The Princess of Wales is renowned for her enviable coat collection, a wardrobe essential for her many official engagements.

Kate consistently gravitates towards structured silhouettes that fall gracefully to the shin, favouring timeless British tailoring with classic details such as notch lapels, clean lines and military accents.

Her outerwear repertoire spans versatile grey wool coats, refined camel designs, show-stopping red, statement tartans, and this season’s must-have shade: rich burgundy.

Versatile grey

Kate recently stepped out in new outerwear and looked effortlessly chic, opting for the Maxi City Coat from Jigsaw.

The longline silhouette is cut from brushed wool for a soft feel, featuring flap pockets, a centre back vent and a contrasting melton undercollar for a refined finish.

Kate wore the coat in grey, a past-season colourway, but it’s currently available in taupe, brown and purple – shades to suit every style and mood.

On-trend burgundy

One colour that is trending right now is undoubtedly burgundy. The rich, autumnal hue is everywhere, adorning knitwear, dresses, corduroy trousers and outerwear alike.

A royal fan of the shade is none other than the Princess of Wales, who has been spotted in numerous coats in this coveted colour.

And Kate recently embraced the trend head-to-toe when she and the Royal Family welcomed President Donald Trump and the First Lady to Windsor.

If you’re keen to recreate the look on a budget, you’re in luck – there are plenty of high street options that look much more expensive than their price tag.

Traditional tartan

Kate’s outerwear collection features two tartan coats by Holland Cooper: the Marlborough Trench and the Double-Breasted Wool Coat.

The latter is a standout piece in rich green and blue plaid, defined by its double-breasted silhouette, gold-embossed buttons and military-inspired tailoring.

Kate recently wore it during a visit to the Ever After Garden at The Royal Marsden Hospital, having debuted the look at a royal engagement in Merseyside, where she teamed it with a Cefinn knitted dress and Gianvito Rossi courts in tonal shades.

With a £749 price tag, the trench is very much an investment, though brands like Hobbs and House of Bruar – worn by Carole Middleton – offer elegant tartan alternatives at more accessible prices.

Show-stopping red

Another favourite in Kate’s wardrobe is her vibrant red Alexander McQueen coat, which she has worn on at least five public occasions.

Most recently, it accompanied her on a visit to Wales in February. For the Together at Christmas carol service the previous year, she gave the coat a festive flourish by fastening a black velvet Jigsaw bow at the centre.

She continued the theme with an Emilia Wickstead pleated tartan skirt and Ralph Lauren suede knee-high boots, blending elegance with sustainability.

For those inspired by Kate’s style, brands such as Phase Eight and Wallis offer chic, budget-friendly options that capture a similar look.

Autumnal green

During her visit to Northern Ireland with Prince William in October, Kate once again proved her commitment to sustainable style, rewearing her bespoke Alexander McQueen green coat – a piece she’s worn five times since its debut in 2020.

She completed the look with her trusty brown suede knee-high boots from Gianvito Rossi.

The choice perfectly captured Kate’s flair for symbolic dressing; the rich green hue paid a thoughtful nod to Ireland’s verdant landscape while remaining effortlessly chic.

As autumn sets in, this shade feels especially fitting. Fortunately, the high street offers countless ways to emulate the look, with royal-approved brands John Lewis and Jigsaw offering welcome variations.

Understated camel

Kate has two camel coats in regular rotation – one by Massimo Dutti and another by Max&Co – which she often styles with navy outfits, as she did during a 2023 visit to a nursing home.

Her Max&Co Longrun wrap coat, introduced into her wardrobe in 2022, is designed with classic notch lapels and a detachable belt, creating a snug yet elegant silhouette.

Its streamlined cut and warm camel tone make it a versatile staple, blending understated sophistication with everyday practicality.

The timeless design remains available to buy, but for those seeking a similar look at a lower price point, The White Company and Superdry both offer worthy alternatives.

Winter white

Monochromatic white is a winter classic, as the Princess memorably demonstrated at the 2023 Christmas carol service.

Kate arrived at Westminster Abbey in an ivory coat, layered over a coordinating Kiltane jumper and Holland Cooper trousers.

In a surprising twist, Kensington Palace revealed that her coat was crafted by Chris Kerr, a menswear tailor based in Savile Row.

The bespoke piece was immaculately tailored – just like these striking options from Karen Millen and Forever New.

The Princess of Wales is renowned for her enviable coat collection, a wardrobe essential for her many official engagements.
