With his well-tailored suits and long wavy hair, Justin Trudeau was often hailed as the best dressed man in the world of politics.
But since resigning as Canadian prime minister the 54-year-old has undergone a whirlwind transformation, going from polished premier to letting loose with girlfriend Katy Perry.
The couple made their relationship status official late last year and in the short time since then Trudeau has lived up to the image of boyfriend to a global pop star.
In November he flashed a tattooed bicep as he posted a selfie to his 4.6million Instagram followers urging them to get a flu jab.
He wrote: ‘Got my flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine today. It’s a simple way to protect yourself, your loved ones, and our health care workers. If you haven’t gotten yours yet, book it today at your local pharmacy or clinic.’
But while some dubbed the former politician’s new look ‘cool’, another joked: ‘This is the picture he sent to Katy Perry for sure.’
He continued to showcase his new midlife look at Coachella over the weekend, which he attended alongside Perry, who shunned a First Lady-inspired look for a bold slogan t-shirt reading: ‘Please do not give me a rip off your vape no matter what I say’ while posing with a cigarette behind her ear.
Justin, much like all the A-Listers at the Californian music festival this year, went for a low-key ensemble and dress in jeans, a white t-shirt, grey trainers, and a navy Canadian football cap – Alouettes – worn backwards for extra style credit.
Once again, shocked onlookers remarked on Trudeau’s new lifestyle, saying: ‘Seeing your ex-prime minister in a club is so wild’ and ‘No stress looks good on you, Justin.’
Although Trudeau has let go of the prestige he held for a decade as Canada’s prime minister, it’s clear he’s wasted no time capitalising on his image to transition to full-time Instagram influencer.
Three days after passing the torch to Mark Carney last year, Trudeau posted a selfie showing him stocking up on household items at a popular department store as he prepared to settle into his new lifestyle.
The picture showed him carrying a trolley full of kitchen items, including a Master Chef cordless electric kettle and a hand mixer.
The comments acknowledged the stark difference in Trudeau’s revamped look. ‘Just a normal Canadian dude shopping for kitchenware now,’ read one comment under the post. Another noted: ‘Looks like he is setting up his bachelor pad.’
He’s not the only one to have undergone a makeover in recent times, and at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, Katy Perry ditched her usual aesthetic for a demure look when accompanying Justin.
The singer, who rose to fame with the single I Kissed a Girl, temporarily exchanged her playful image for a conservative wardrobe befitting a politician’s partner.
Perry, with her hair slicked back in a bun, opted for a scoop-neck cardigan with balloon sleeves and a matching pencil skirt from luxury Paris brand Jacquemus – in stealth wealth beige.
The singer’s accessories, including drop earrings from The Care, were similarly pared back.
But Katy still showed her cheeky personality when she winked at her politician boyfriend at the event.
The singer joined The Female Quotient lounge to support the former Canadian Prime Minister as he spoke during the event.
Katy left Justin grinning from ear to ear when she caught his eye contact from across the room.
In a clip shared to Instagram, Female Quotient wrote: ‘The room was packed, the energy was high and Katy kept it low-key, cheering them on. A reminder that showing up matters.’
Justin was joined on stage by his former Chief of Staff, Katie Telford, to discuss women and underrepresented voices.
The couple, who first sparked dating rumours in July last year, have since forged a firm bond and are frequently spotted out and about on lavish jaunts.
