Jose Mourinho’s nepo-baby children and their VERY different lives

When your father is one of the biggest names in world football, you pretty much have one of two options: embrace the spotlight or ignore it entirely.

For decades, Jose Mourinho has cemented his place as one of the game’s most celebrated managers, chalking up trophies across Portugal, Spain and England and providing the game with some of its most memorable moments in recent times.

The man who boldly christened himself ‘The Special One’ upon arriving at Chelsea in 2004 has since dominated headlines not just for his tactical brilliance, but also for his theatrical touchline antics. His swagger, confidence, and flair for drama have made him a perennial media favourite, impossible to ignore on or off the pitch.

But behind his box-office persona lies a quieter family story, one that isn’t defined by tactics, trophies or occasional tantrum. Mourinho and his wife, Matilde Faria, have two children whose lives could not be more different from each other. One has chosen privacy while the other has embraced fame with open arms.

Jose Mario, Mourinho’s youngest son who celebrated his 26th birthday on Monday, spent his youth trying to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Shouldering the pressure of being a descendant of one of world football’s brightest minds and most prominent figures, he set out to become a goalkeeper after his grandfather Felix, who enjoyed a fruitful career in Portugal with the gloves and earned a singular cap on the international stage.

Mourinho's daughter embraces the spotlight he has created, while his son actively avoids it

Jose Mario initially joined Inter Milan’s youth academy while his father coached there between 2008 and 2010, before subsequently switching to Real Madrid and later Chelsea as the Portuguese manager moved clubs.

Shortly after the family returned to west London, Jose Mario found himself on the books at Fulham before deciding not to pursue a career in senior football.

Since then, aside from occasionally appearing alongside Mourinho at notable points during his managerial career, such as celebrating his father’s Europa League triumph with Manchester United in 2017, Jose Mario has largely stayed out of the public eye.

A decade ago, he publicly revealed to fans on social media that he was in a relationship with his then-girlfriend, named Vicky, but has since appeared to deliberately keep his professional and private life away from the spotlight.

Now, very little is known about Jose Mario, as he chooses to keep his Instagram account private and only appears in the odd photograph snapped by his older sister Matilde, who also spent much of her childhood in the posh London neighbourhood of Belgravia during her father’s first stint at Chelsea. He does sometimes stream publicly on Twitch, given he’s an avid fan of video games.

While Jose Mario has chosen to retreat from public view, Matilde, four years his elder, has taken the opposite approach, embracing opportunities that come with her famous surname.

Matilde has carved out a life firmly in the spotlight, building a reputation as both a fashion influencer and entrepreneur in her own right. Having grown up between Lisbon, London and Madrid as her father’s career took the family across Europe, she later settled in the English capital, where she studied fashion and business.

The young entrepreneur is the founder of her own jewellery brand, an eco-conscious label that champions recycled gold. The brand has quickly grown popular, attracting celebrity clients and praise from fashion insiders. Matilde frequently uses her social media platforms to promote both her designs and the ethical values behind them.

Matilde and Danny tied the knot in a lavish ceremony widely covered across lifestyle media

Unlike her brother, Matilde appears entirely comfortable with public attention. Her Instagram offers a glimpse into her flashy and glamorous lifestyle, from fashion shoots and brand launches to the occasional red-carpet appearance.

The contrast to Jose Mario’s deliberate discretion was perhaps most evident last year when Matilde tied the knot with her husband Danny Graham – not the former Premier League footballer – in a lavish wedding ceremony in Portugal.

The stylish celebration, attended by family and friends and widely covered across lifestyle media platforms, showed off Matilde’s flair for fashion and ease within the public eye, reinforcing her status as the more visible of Mourinho’s two children.

Described by HELLO! magazine as someone who is fast becoming the ‘poster girl for conscious luxury’, Matilde has attracted several celebrities including Kate Hudson and Kylie Minogue to wear her jewellry – and now is targeting royalty.

Speaking about her label MATILDE to the magazine, she said: ‘We’ve been honoured to have [the King’s second cousin] Amelia Windsor wear the brand. She’s such an advocate for sustainability.

‘Hopefully one day we can see Princess Charlotte rocking some Matilde jewellery. I think that would be fab.’

Matilde, who describes her jewellry as ‘modern yet timeless’, also opened up on her relationship with family, saying: ‘I’m really close to them, and I feel really close to my Portuguese heritage, even though I haven’t lived in Portugal in more than 20 years.’

The influencer now resides in a stunning townhouse in Chelsea where she lives with her property consultant husband and regularly posts on Instagram to grow her brand.

Last month, Matilde travelled to Portugal to celebrate her father’s birthday, watching on from the Estadio da Luz stands as Benfica pulled off a stunning 4-2 upset over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Mourinho, who has been in charge of Benfica since September, triumphed over his old side thanks to a dramatic stoppage-time winner astonishingly scored by his goalkeeper.

It was the latest gripping episode in the chronicles of Mourinho’s box-office career, and it felt entirely fitting that it was his daughter, not his son, who shared the moment with him in the public spotlight.

Given his passion for family and football, it’s safe to assume Jose Mario also would have celebrated Mourinho’s triumph – perhaps by quietly raising a glass to his old man from the comfort of his sofa.
