Jordan Henderson targeted by Premier League side and European giants

  • Jordan Henderson has been a key player for Ajax since joining the club in 2024
  • The midfielder, 35, could leave the club for free due to a clause in his contract
  • LISTEN to Whistleblowers: Are Arsenal fans right to feel they’ve been aggrieved by the fixtures?

Nottingham Forest and Marseille are keen on signing Jordan Henderson this summer and the England international can leave Ajax for free due to a clause in his contract.

Forest are one of several teams keeping a close eye on Henderson as well as Marseille and others on the continent.

It is understood there is a clause in the former Liverpool’s captain which would allow him to trigger becoming a free agent before mid July and leaving the Dutch club for nothing.

Henderson played 45 times for Ajax last season as Francesco Farioli’s men narrowly missed out on winning the Dutch title despite having a commanding lead with a month to play.

The 35-year-old remains a trusted component of Thomas Tuchel’s England squads and wants to play in next summer’s World Cup.

Therefore, he has not fully decided whether it is best to leave or stay put at Ajax but clubs in England and abroad are keen to have his experience in their squad ahead of the new season.

Henderson, who came through the ranks at Sunderland, previously made 492 appearances for Liverpool between 2011 and 2023 and was appointed as club captain in 2015.

During his time at Anfield, he lifted the Premier League title in 2020, while he also won two EFL Cups, the FA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Community Shield and Club World Cup.

The midfielder left to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in the summer of 2023, a move that saw him earn widespread condemnation from the LGBTQ+ community, and endured a difficult six-month stint in the Middle East.

Henderson returned to Europe in January 2024 when he linked up with Ajax and he was soon named as captain of the Dutch giants.

The 35-year-old has since played 57 times for the team, who appointed former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga as their new coach over the summer.

Henderson has also won 83 caps for England and after falling out of favour during the latter stages of Gareth Southgate’s tenure, he had made the first two squads under Tuchel.
