Jeremy Clarkson has boasted of a helicopter landing pad in his annual A-Level results day message.
The former Top Gear presenter broke his silence as a record numbers of 18-year-olds across England, Wales and Northern Ireland today secured places at universities and colleges.
But it is a day that brings both tears of joy and devastation, with many left disappointed by results they were not expecting.
Seeking to reassure A-Level students across the country, Clarkson has become synonymous with his annual results day posts about how his life has successfully panned out despite getting poor grades.
Posting on X this morning, the Clarkson’s Farm star started with his usual introduction, writing: ‘If your A level results are disappointing, don’t worry. I got a C and two Us…’
But this year, he revealed a surprise new purchase, adding: ‘Here I am today, installing lights for a helicopter landing pad in my garden.
Clarkson’s long-standing tweets, dating back as far as 2014, have lightened a tense day for many students in recent years.
Last year, he boasted about owning his new Cotswolds pub, The Farmer’s Dog, which opened last August.
Sticking with the Cotswold theme in 2023, Clarkson reminded the public that he also has his own brewery.
But the presenter’s most popular variation came in 2016, when he revealed his results and added: ‘I’m currently on a superyacht in the Med.’
And the year before, he wrote: ‘If your A level results aren’t great, be cheered by the fact that I got a C and two Us. And I’m currently sitting in a villa in St Tropez.’
Other tweets have boasted of owning a Bentley, deciding which of his Range Rovers to use for the day, having a chef to prepare him truffles for breakfast and renting a grand chateau in France for the summer.
Clarkson’s traditional results day message came on a day in which the number of students accepted on to UK degree courses has risen to a record high year.
A total of 439,180 applicants have gained a place at university or college – up 3.1 per cent on the same point last year, according to data published by Ucas.
Ucas said it is the highest number of placed students on results day on record.
Overall, 82 per cent of UK 18-year-old applicants awaiting a decision on results day secured their first choice – which was the same proportion as last year.
For 18-year-olds in the UK, 255,130 applicants have been accepted onto a university or college course – up 4.7 per cent on last year.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has said that A-level results this year are ‘broadly in line with previous years’.
Speaking to Nick Ferrari on LBC, she said: ‘If we were to compare between years, we’d probably compare with either last year or 2019.
‘Of course during the pandemic there was a lot of disruption, which I understand, and the then-Conservative government did have to make some difficult decisions about how to manage that process for our young people, but there were some problems.
‘I won’t dwell on them, that is in the past now, but there were some issues at the time about how some of that was managed.
‘But where we are right now is that young people receiving their results today will have been the cohort of young people who sat their GCSEs in the usual way, so did them as part of that exam assessment process that everyone would expect to be the normal way of doing things.’
