Jaguar’s first car to take it into a dramatic electric future will be called Type 01, the company confirmed today.
The British car maker said the moniker ‘inaugurates a new era’ as it takes another step closer to its £120,000 four‑door GT hitting the road early next year.
Rawdon Glover, the managing director who has been on the sharp end of criticism for the firm’s controversial rebrand, said the Type 01 name is ‘part of the story’ for Jaguar entering its new chapter.
‘For me, the zero signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter – a ‘one of a kind’,’ he said.
Jaguar’s lineage of ‘Type’ suffix nameplates dates back to the Le Mans‑winning C‑Type racing car of the 1950s. However, it is most recognised for the wonderful E‑Type of the Sixties and, most recently, the F‑Type sports car.
The ‘0’ is also a nod to the EV’s zero tailpipe emissions, Jaguar said.

The Type 01 name will feature subtly on the car’s bodywork as Jaguar adopts a minimalist design language for its new breed of battery‑powered vehicles.
This includes a strikethrough motif where the bonnet meets the windscreen, along with ‘bold, linear graphics’ that will be a signature of the ‘new’ Jaguar.
A sneak preview of its visual identity will be showcased this week as the car makes an appearance in Monaco for this weekend’s Formula E races – the eco‑conscious alternative to F1.

‘The ‘Type’ designation unites the brand’s history of innovation in design, technology and performance with the most advanced Jaguar ever. The first of its type, with unmistakable presence achieved through an innovative new body architecture,’ the company said.
With more than 1,000 horsepower, the new electric Jaguar is going to be incredibly potent but also highly sophisticated.
This abundance of power is delivered to all four wheels by a single electric motor at the front and a pair at the rear.
Torque vectoring – the distribution of engine power to individual wheels rather than across an axle – manages the delivery of power while also monitoring for any modicum of wheel slip some 1,000 times per second.

The full‑production Type 01 is scheduled to be revealed later this year with first deliveries in early 2027
Energy will be delivered from a 120kWh battery pack with a very clever design feature: a split in the cell structure in the floor to provide more comfortable legroom for rear‑seat occupants.
This should see the car deliver an estimated 430 miles of range on a full charge.
The Daily Mail was among the first to drive a prototype version of the electric grand tourer in March.
The full‑production Type 01 is scheduled to be revealed later this year – and we’ll be among the first group to see it.
‘Its exuberant modernist design, pioneering technology and instinctive driving dynamics will underpin future Jaguar models,’ the brand says.
