President Donald Trump will discuss the possibility of the US withdrawing from Nato in a meeting with the alliance’s Secretary-General Mark Rutte, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said today.
It comes as the US President said that Nato was ‘tested and they failed’ during the Iran war, Leavitt said, sharing a direct quote from Trump.
The US President today welcomed Rutte to the White House, as the war with Iran pushed US relations with other members of the military alliance to a crisis point.
The Republican leader has threatened to withdraw from the 32-member transatlantic alliance and denounced Washington’s European allies in recent weeks for what he said was inadequate support for the US-Israeli bombing campaign in Iran.
Trump said on Tuesday the attacks would be paused after the two sides agreed to a two-week ceasefire.
