Tom Hardy leads the Hollywood action stars embracing a dad bod

Being famous in Hollywood has always come with a huge pressure on image, and while the narrative often focuses on women it is an issue that also effects male stars.

It isn’t uncommon for actors to undergo huge physical transformations for their roles as muscular superheroes or on screen hunks with intense regimes put in place to help them achieve their physical peak.

However, when the cameras aren’t rolling, many male stars are choosing to embrace a more relaxed ‘dad bod’ as they take the pressure off and enjoy their lives.

And the dad bod physique has had a surge in popularity among young women after a survey from Dating.com found 75 percent of single people were fans of the dad bod.

On Tuesday, Tom Hardy was seen showcasing his array of body inkings as he went shirtless on the beach in Barbados with more of a relaxed figure.

The cost of a chiselled muscular physique comes at a cost, and last year the Mad Max star opened up about the number of injuries he has acquired from his action character lifestyle over the years.

Meanwhile Channing Tatum admitted looking so muscular ‘isn’t natural’ and the amount he was working out for Magic Mike ‘wasn’t healthy’.

So who are the Hollywood stars embracing the dad bod when they aren’t on screen?

Last May Tom Hardy opened up about the cost of staying action-ready for decades after suffering with many injuries.

‘I’ve had two knee surgeries now,’ he told Esquire. ‘My disc’s herniated in my back, I’ve got sciatica as well. And I have that… is it plantar fasciitis? Where did that come from? And why? Why?!’

The star revealed he had also torn a tendon in his hip and confessed: ‘It’s like, it’s all falling to bits now, and it’s not going to get better.’

Over the years Tom has endured many types of training, dropping 15 per cent body fat and gaining 20kg of muscle for his role as MMA fighter Tommy Conlon in Octagon.

He underwent 7am gym sessions as well as, skipping, two hours of padwork, Muay Thai sparring, a couple of hours of Jiu-Jitsu, choreography and two more hours in the gym.

Meanwhile, when starring in The Dark Knight Rises he gained another two stone, so that he weighed in a total of 90kg.

Jason Momoa

Jason Momoa was cruelly body-shamed for no longer having a perfectly chiselled superhero physique when he was snapped on the beach in Italy back in 2019.

The star was seen without his washboard abs as he embraced more of a ‘dad bod’ and the actor has been open about the physical toll of having to train for such demanding roles and how he has no interest in keeping up his movie physique for vanity.

Speaking to Men’s Health, Jason confessed: ‘I just have a really hard time training for vanity. These roles kill me because I’m not into that s**t. But it’s my job to become the character I’m playing.’

Prioritising calorie counting and embracing Eric Laciste’s AR7 training method, which means there is little rest period between strength and cardio workouts, the star incorporates a mixture of climbing, kettlebell swings, bear crawls, dead hangs and pull-ups in his workouts and he also boxes with a strong resistance band.

Commenting on how the intense workout comes with a price he added: ‘You want to look good, sure, but you have to do so much for the part that you get injured.

‘You have to protect yourself. Train for function rather than how you look, man.’

Vin Diesel

The star has shared how he often slows down his intense exercise regime when he isn't on screen (pictured in Return of Xander Cage with Deepika Padukone in 2017)

Vin Diesel has shared how he often slows down his intense exercise regime when he isn’t on screen.

He told Men’s Health in August: ‘I work out less and enjoy it more these days. It’s a time in my week where I don’t have to juggle things. I can just exercise and be present in that.’

He also told Train: ‘When I was younger – especially when I was bouncing – it was about being as big as possible and it was about looking formidable.

‘Now I’m much more focused on hitting every part of my body and my fitness in general. Also, there’s now a lot more fight training and then Pilates and yoga.

‘Often, I adjust my training for each role, and on I did a lot of jiu-jitsu, which really helped my fitness in general and stamina and agility.’

Most recently Vin has been training for his role as Theo Kojak in the upcoming movie reboot of the classic detective series Kojak.

Taking to social media to share snippets of his gym routine he told fans: ‘I actually had to gain a lot of weight before this portion of the project. And I actually peaked to 270, which is a career high for me. I can’t tell you how rewarding it is as an actor.’

Channing Tatum

Back in 2019, Channing Tatum joked that he had a dad bod, especially after becoming a father, as he shared that he didn't have time for the gym (pictured)

Speaking on the Kelly Clarkson show in 2022 he explained: ' It’s hard to look like that. Even if you do work out, to be that kind of in shape is not natural' (pictured on Magic Mike)

Channing Tatum has also been open about the difficulty of maintaining his famous Magic Mike look and said he only gets in shape for certain roles.

Back in 2019 the star joked that he had a dad bod, especially after becoming a father, as he shared that he didn’t have time for the gym.

He joked: ‘[I’ve got a] dad bod, man! I got a kid now, this is what it is. I can’t have a full-time job of being in the gym anymore!’.

When asked what it takes to be a Magic Mike Live performer, Channing said: ‘It is a full-time job. It isn’t just working out, it is diet, it’s everything. It is a lifestyle.

‘What you see in Magic Mike [the film] is me holding it together for two weeks. As soon as they cut in the last scene, I’m like, “Where are the cheeseburgers?”‘

In fact the star almost turned down Magic Mike 3 due to its demanding physical nature.

Speaking on the Kelly Clarkson show in 2022 he explained: ‘It’s hard to look like that. Even if you do work out, to be that kind of in shape is not natural.

‘That’s not even healthy. You have to starve yourself. I don’t think when you’re that lean, it’s actually healthy.

‘I don’t know how people who work a 9-to-5 actually stay in shape because it’s my full-time job and I can barely do it.’

Less of a fan of the dad bod, Will Smith underwent a strict weight loss journey after an image of himself in the ‘worst shape’ of his life went viral on social media back in 2021.

While filming Emancipation, he explained the role inspired him to lose some serious weight and playing a character inspired by the former slave known as Whipped Peter ‘absolutely changed’ his life and inspired him to make a major life change.

Speaking on Red Table Talk in December 2022, he said: ‘You guys may remember I posted the out of shape — the “dad bod” picture.

‘The “dad bod” picture was my beginning of preparation to lose weight for Peter. I was probably 225-ish when I started and at the lowest, on the movie, I got to 195 [pounds].’

He previously shared that his time at home in the early days of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic led to more eating than usual. Coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle than usual, it made him put on weight.

Pierce Brosnan

Known for his strong physique the star has understandably relaxed into more of a dad bod in recent years and is set to celebrate his 73rd birthday next month (pictured in 2023)

Known for his strong physique the star has understandably relaxed into more of a dad bod in recent years and is set to celebrate his 73rd birthday next month.

However the star still prioritises his strength, revealing in 2018 that he had taken up Pilates in a bid to stay in shape, as he unveiled a new £5,000 home trapeze machine.

He is also a fan of golf and keeps active with sculling, rowing and biking.

He told GQ: ‘I’m right here on the water’s edge, so I ride my bike around the Lady Bird Lake of it all, and I’ve been sculling. I took up rowing, so I joined the rowing club down here. I’ve been sculling, which I absolutely adore.’

‘It’s a beautiful pastime, rowing is. You get on a rowing machine, Drew. Get yourself a rowing machine and do 20 minutes a day, and you’re going to be fit as a fiddle.’
