Sleeve tattoos exploded in popularity during the early 2000s and 2010s.
However for the last few years there has been a huge surge in dainty and fine line tattoos, particular inkings on fingers and hands.
Called ‘prison’ tattoos, the illustrations are numerous, small, uneven and appear homemade likening them to what prisoners can create behind bars with limited tools.
And many celebrities have fully embraced the trend, with singers and actresses expressing their style through their hand tattoos.
From tribal patterns to heart outlines, to fun sketches and meaningful words written in cursive, the A-lister certainly aren’t short of body ink.
Many celebrities have become synonymous with their famous tattoos, but can you guess which hand tattoo belongs to which star?
Starting easy with perhaps one of the most iconic hand tattoos of the British showbiz world.
The tribal design inked on the side of the star’s right hand is a Polynesian Maori Design and stands for the letter C.
In a 2010 interview with The Guardian the star said: ‘I like the one on my hand, the little one. Just an abstract thing.’
As well as her hand tattoo, the star has several other inkings including a treble clef and a rose on her right thigh and a huge rose garden across the entirety of her lower back and bottom.
If that hasn’t given it away, it’s Cheryl!
The singer is believed to have eight tattoos in total and she decided on the famous rose garden after throwing caution to the wind after surviving Malaria.
She has also disclosed that the elaborate tattoo cost her as much as a small car.
The next star is also a singer and has previously said she has over 40 hand tattoos.
The markings cover her fingers and the back of her hand, going down to her wrists.
With designs including a outline of a heart on her right ring finger, her nickname ‘babydoll’ and Hebrew phrases.
She also has a range of hearts, leaves and a crescent moon adding to her growing collection.
Most recently she added a new inking after starring in Wicked, while others are for the men she has romanced including Mac Miller, Pete Davidson and Dalton Gomez.
That’s right it’s Ariana Grande.
The singer currently has over 70 tattoos all over her body after she got her first inking at 18.
In, 2017, she got a tattoo of a bee as a nod to the victims of the suicide bomber attack in Manchester during Ariana’s Dangerous Woman Tour concert.
In 2018, she showed off her hand tattoo ‘Lumos’. Lumos is a spell from Harry Potter and means ‘light’ in Latin. It might also have to do with The Light Is Coming from her fourth studio album Sweetener (album).
Ariana also has a cloud tattoo on her finger that she had done in May 2018. It matched that mark her fiance at the time Pete Davidson had.
She is one of the most stylish stars in the public eye and her edgy look runs into her tattoos.
The star has a flame on her left index finger as well as a small dancing man on her left thumb.
The dancing man pays tribute to graffiti artist, Keith Haring and was done back in July 2015 while filming her music video for New Love.
She also has the word Patience inked on her left hand as well as an eight point starburst on the middle finger of her right hand.
It’s Dua Lipa!
While she doesn’t have any huge pieces, she is covered in tiny inkings including a barbed wire heart and the word ANGEL on her upper arm.
A big fan of dainty tattoos, this actress has singular leaves drawn on each of her hands by Dr Woo.
On her right middle finger she has an outline of a crown and on both middle fingers she has a crescent mood with dots.
She has her band’s name Lola wolf spelled out along her cuticles on both hands, with a black dot above each letter.
The phrase, which also is a combination of her two siblings’ names, was finished in August 2015.
She also has the word ‘OM’ written in Sanskrit on her right hand to symbolise the sound of the universe.
On her left she has her father’s birthday ‘5.26.64’ as well as a star, a red heart and the word ‘up’ on the inside of her thumb.
It’s Zoe Kravitz! As well as her hand tattoos, the star has several tattoos on her back including a large dragonfly and markings down her spine.
With a total of at least over 70 tattoos this star’s collection appears to grow by the day.
As well as a dream catcher on her ribs and numerous illustrations of her pets, the singer also has several hand tattoos.
On her right hand she has a Sagittarius symbol for her zodiac sign, a pot leaf, a flower, a heart, an eye, two triangles, and three horizontal lines.
Meanwhile in 2019, at a time coinciding with her divorce she got the word ‘Freedom’ tattooed in cursive across her right hand.
Her and her mum also have matching hearts inked on their pinky fingers.
Of course, it’s Miley Cyrus!
Even the singer herself was flabbergasted to learn she had 74 tattoos herself when her inkings were tallied up during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel in 2020.
When Kimmel revealed the finally tally Miley’s jaw literally dropped. All she could muster in response was a ‘huh?’
One of her first and most famous tattoos which she got when she was 17 is located on her rib cage and reads ‘just breathe’.
On her back the songbird has a rendering of a handwritten note from Yoko Ono and on her arms she has several including ancient symbols, an avocado, a jar of Vegemite, a flower and dozens of others.
This hitmaker has an impressive henna-style mandala inking covering her left hand which she had done by her go to tattoo artist Bang Bang.
The pattern starts at the cuticles and flows into her wrist.
She also has ‘Shhh’ on one of her finger, and ‘Love’ written in cursive on her opposite hand.
It’s Rihanna!
The star has numerous recognisable inkings including the Egyptian goddess Isis across her chest, in honor of her late grandmother Clara ‘Dolly’ Brathwaite.
A fan of the fine line tattoo, this star is believed to have 24 tattoos, including many finger illustrations.
Starting with a sweet bow drawing on her wrist she also has a chevrons on her pinky and a gun tattoo on the palm side of her middle finger.
After getting the inking she penned at the time: ‘Tbh I don’t know why I have this tattoo… just another story to tell lol. It is what it is.’
She also has the letter K on her left hand and 3:30 on her right hand, which is thought to be a nod to the bible verse John 3:30.
She also has several hearts, arrows, infinity signs on her right hand.
And the hand owner is, Hailey Bieber! To celebrate her first wedding anniversary she also got a cursive J on her wedding finger.
This star has several hand tattoos including stars, dots and a cherry on her middle finger.
She also has the date 17.7.22 at the tip of her hand, but the meaning behind it doesn’t seem to be publicly known.
For her fourth anniversary with her husband the pair got matching ‘yours’ ‘mine’ tattoos on the side of their hands.
It’s Petra Ecclestone! The heiress has a range of hand tattoos and has shared the process visiting Dr Woo to get them done on her Instagram.
