Gerwyn Price throws his weight behind Reform UK ahead of May election

Darts star Gerwyn Price has backed Reform ahead of the Welsh Senedd elections in May.

The 2021 world champion posed for a photo with a party-branded placard with the message ‘I’m voting Reform UK’.

Price, known as the Iceman, has consistently thrown his weight behind Nigel Farage’s party.

He recently shared a post on Facebook which read: ‘Be careful what you wish for people, vote Reform UK Wales.’

On May 7, Wales will elect 96 members to the Senedd – the devolved Welsh Parliament. That takes place on the same day that England vote in the local elections, with around 5,000 seats across 136 local councils on offer.

Price’s support gathered the attention of Reform Wales leader Dan Thomas, who wrote: ‘Thrilled to have the support of the Iceman. From one Valleys boy to another, thank you, Gerwyn.’

The Iceman was left disappointed in October when his voting exhortations were ignored

Somewhat ironically, in September, Reform’s first ever Senedd politician hinted at the fact that the party could scrap the body.

Laura Anne Jones said: ‘We need to try and make the Senedd work for the people of Wales, but if it doesn’t, we need to question whether the Senedd is really adding value to Wales.’

Price’s previous efforts to amp up support for Reform have not paid off. In October, he urged people to vote for Llyr Powell in the Caerphilly by-election but the upstart candidate lost out to Plaid Cymru’s seasoned suit Lindsay Whittle.

The former PDC World Champion first hinted at his support for Reform last July, when he briefly changed his Facebook profile picture to the party’s logo.

Price lives in Markham, around a 20-minute drive from Caerphilly in south-east Wales, in a house which contains the ‘man cave of dreams’.

His basement features a snooker table, pool table, and cinema screen, and of course a darts board and framed memorabilia from throughout his career.

Darts stars are not known for making extended political commentary but Price might be at loggerheads with Michael van Gerwen if they have a chinwag on the subject.

That’s because the Dutchman declared Brexit to be ‘Brex-s***’ back in 2019 – a view which wouldn’t chime with the pro-UK independence firebrand Nigel Farage.

After winning his third PDC World Championship title, he said: ‘I hope I’m going to get a visa. It’s horrible isn’t it? Did you vote for Brexit? Brex-s***.

‘I don’t like it. Look at the pound and the euro. I get everything paid in pounds so just have a look how much it dropped.

‘Let’s say it dropped by 10%, that’s cost me 10% of my prize money straight away. So that’s quite a lot of money. But it’s not only that. It’s horrible.’
