Gary Neville has claimed that only one signing that Manchester United have made in the last ten years has been a success.

United have frequently changed managers in recent years and there has also been a lack of stability on the pitch, with a range of players being brought in.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Antony, Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho have all arrived at United for significant amounts.

However, United legend Neville believes that the vast majority of the signings have been unsuccessful.

Neville also outlined the size of the task that the club’s incoming new head coach Ruben Amorim will face.

Neville stated that it is important for Amorim to ensure that he gets the best out of the players at his disposal.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said: ‘He has to get the best out of the players. The players need to take responsibility for what’s happened in the last 10 years.

‘The club have signed a lot of players that other clubs wanted and when those players have arrived at Manchester United they’ve deteriorated. Why is that? It could be the coach, it could be the players, it could be the environment is too big for them, whatever it is it has to change because if he [Amorim] doesn’t change that he will fall the same way the rest of them have.’

According to Neville, Bruno Fernandes is United’s only successful signing in the past decade.

Fernandes joined United from Sporting in January 2020 and is now captain.

Neville said: ‘There are managers that have come here that have been tried and tested and successful, there are players that have come here with great potential and ones that you thought would be good signings for the club – only really Bruno [Fernandes] I can think of in 10 years has signed for the club and done more than I thought he would. I can’t think of any other player. That’s £1.8bn spent in the last 10 years, that’s one thing that has to change.’

United made the decision to sack Erik ten Hag following a concerning start to the season, with the club in 13th place in the Premier League.

Amorim will officially take charge on November 11 and has much work to do as United attempt to return to their former glories.

Despite often spending heavily in the transfer market, United have often lacked cohesion and consistency on the pitch.
