Former Tottenham star embarrassingly misses THREE straight penalties

Former Tottenham and Fulham striker Carlos Vinicius suffered the extraordinary embarrassment of missing three penalties in the space of just six minutes during a  Copa Sudamericana clash on Wednesday.

Vinicius, 31, scored eight goals in 52 games for Fulham before making a permanent move to the Brazilian club Gremio in the summer of 2025.

Prior to that, Vinicius spent a season on loan at Tottenham from Portuguese side Benfica, scoring 10 goals in all competitions. His only Premier League goal for Spurs came against Aston Villa.

The Brazilian forward has scored 13 goals across all competitions for Gremio this season but suffered a nightmare from 12 yards against Chilean side Palestino and their goalkeeper, Sebastian Perez.

His first penalty, on 11 minutes, was pushed around the post by Perez – but the spot-kick was retaken after the goalkeeper was adjudged to have stepped off his line too early.

Vinicius stepped up for a second time in the 14th minute, with Perez pushing his effort onto the left post.

Remarkably Perez was once again penalised for moving off from his line too soon, with another retake ordered.

The penalty was taken by Vinicius for a third time, with the forward slipping on the surface as he decided to shoot down the middle.

Despite diving to the left, Perez made an outstanding – and legal – save with his feet, before he was jumped all over by his teammates in celebration.

Vinicius’ horror show would prove consequential for Gremio, as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Group F Copa Sudamericana rivals Palestino.

In a further cruel twist, Vinicius finally managed to put the ball in the back of the net in the 78th minute – but the goal was disallowed after it was overruled by a VAR review.

And to cap a thoroughly miserable night for the Brazilian, he was booked in the closing stages of the game.

Gremio are second in their group at the halfway mark, which would prove enough to advance to a play-off.
