Former goalkeeper Shay Given damaged the BBC Football Focus set while celebrating Newcastle’s win over Arsenal on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies beat Mikel Arteta’s men 1-0 at St James’ Park to move up to move into the top half of the Premier league.

Alexander Isak got in between William Saliba and Gabriel to head the ball home after a brilliant cross from Anthony Gordon.

The goal sparked wild celebrations from Newcastle fans in the stadium but also from the clubs former goalkeeper Given.

The Irishman was a pundit on Football Focus which was live as Isak scored, with Given able to watch it on a screen while the programme aired a feature.

Alexander Isak scored the only goal as the Magpies beat the Gunners at St James' Park

When it got back to the studio, it was revealed that the 48-year-old damaged a light after kicking a table during his celebrations.

Given said: ‘I just kicked the table by mistake so apologies. Cover it in my expenses. Why did I do that? Well, because Isak has just against Arsenal, brilliant cross from Anthony Gordon, Isak header, top corner, 1-0 to the Toon. Howay.’

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was delighted after the win, telling BBC: ‘You have to be really strong mentality and know results will turn if you continue to do the right things. It has been a difficult week with the fixtures but the players have done really well.

‘There was a better feeling in training after the Chelsea win, as if pressure lifted slightly. Today’s performance was built on hard, work , desire and a lot of really good defending in the second half. I thought we looked good.’

The setback leaves the Gunners adrift of Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race

He added: ‘It was 95 minutes of concentration and consistency in our attitude. We managed and controlled some very good players pretty well today.

‘It’s three points but it means so much because we hadn’t won for a while in the Premier League. I’m sure it will do us the world of good.’
