Former BBC and Sky freelance presenter admits domestic abuse

A sports presenter has pleaded guilty to carrying out a brutal campaign of domestic abuse against a former partner.

Bobby Nwanze, 36, acted aggressively towards the victim and made abusive and derogatory remarks towards her while they were a couple over a four-year period.

The online podcaster, who has worked as a freelance sports reporter with BBC Scotland and Sky, also accused the woman of cheating on him, threatened to damage her car and monitored her movements.

Nwanze, from Edinburgh, also engaged in controlling financial behaviour and on one occasion seized his partner’s arm and pulled her towards him in March 2023.

He pleaded guilty to a heavily amended charge under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018 when he appeared under the name Charles Nwanze at the capital’s sheriff court on Wednesday.

Court papers state Nwanze committed the offences on various occasions at his home, Newcraighall primary school and at North High Street in Musselburgh, East Lothian, between April 2019 and March 2023.

Fiscal depute Emma Tod told the court the Crown will prepare a written narrative into the course of domestic offending and all the details will be read out at the sentencing hearing.

Sheriff Peter Anderson agreed to the motion and deferred sentence on Nwanze for the preparation a criminal justice social work report to next month.

Nwanze’s bail was continued as Sheriff Anderson reminded him of the special condition not to approach or contact the victim in any way until the next hearing.

According to his online profile, Nwanze was a professional footballer who played with Clyde U19s and was employed as part of the media team with Stenhousemuir FC.

He was born in Nigeria and claims he moved to Scotland after being scouted by Rangers FC in 1998. He went on to play for Scotland at youth level.

Nwanze was more recently employed by the City of Edinburgh Council as a property assistant and administrator and is currently studying for a degree in Construction and the Built Environment at Edinburgh Napier University.

The content creator also has a prominent online presence and has interviewed former Scottish international footballers Derek Ferguson, Kevin Thomson and Garry O’Connor on his YouTube channel.
