Can you tell the £1,000 women’s jeans from a £29.99 High Street pair?

I have to confess, I have on occasion spent more than £150 on a pair of jeans. But I practically live in denim, so on a cost-per-wear basis it’s still pretty good value. 

And, in my experience, the quality denim I splurge on proves to be worth the investment. 

The cut is better, the fabric is higher quality, and it can withstand being put through the washing machine without losing its shape.

But when fashion brand Alaïa announced it was launching jeans at £1,000 a pair, even I was staggered. 

They’re crafted (at this price, stuff is never simply ‘made’) from premium Japanese denim, long considered the gold standard of the industry. 

Japanese mills are revered for their craftsmanship and materials; the denim they produce has structure and longevity that cheaper alternatives rarely achieve.

But surely you can find jeans to rival these for a good deal less than that eye-watering price? 

I took to the High Street to find the best denim out there, then tried each pair with simple cotton basics on top and flat shoes below.

Showdown: High end vs High Street

I also took into account the cut, the quality of fabric, comfort, wash and appearance to see if they could compete with the Alaïa design.

I have to hand it to Alaïa: the jeans are striking – an exaggerated barrel shape bordering on horseshoe, with a sculptural quality that feels fashion-forward rather than trend-led. The denim itself is beautifully weighty, so it holds its shape.

But are they 20 times better than the alternatives on the High Street? No.

Worth the splurge 

If it’s that dramatic barrel shape you’re after, head to premium brand ME+EM. Its interpretation delivers a softer version of the sophisticated silhouette that feels more wearable day to day for £175.

An affordable pair that measures up 

Albaray also has an excellent option. Its denim is more rigid – much closer in feel to the Alaïa pair – with a subtle curved leg. At £89, it proves that good denim doesn’t need to come with a luxury price tag.

The best of both worlds   

If rigid, non-stretch denim is what you’re after, make a beeline for JW Anderson’s designs at Uniqlo. In my opinion, they are some of the best jeans on the High Street.

The denim feels substantial without being heavy, the jeans hold their shape beautifully, and, crucially for taller women, they come in multiple leg lengths. Uniqlo also offers alterations, which feels increasingly rare at this price point.

A High Street favourite falls short  

Zara’s offering was the most affordable at just £29.99, but unfortunately, it showed. 

The denim felt noticeably thinner – within just minutes of wearing them, they had already started to soften and drop around the knees. 

I doubt they’d survive many washes.

An unexpected winner   

A surprise hit – and possibly the pair that looked the most expensive overall – was the slightly flared style from River Island (£49). 

There was something very polished about them: straight through the thigh with just enough flare at the hem to elongate the leg. 

There’s nothing overtly fashion-y about them, but maybe that is their strength. 

As a middle-aged mother of three, this is exactly the sort of jean I want in my wardrobe.

Classic and comfortable 

Baukjen’s understated, loose wide-leg styles also deserve a mention. 

Its denim has a softness that makes them incredibly easy to wear.

VERDICT: Is buying designer really worth it? 

The truth is, great denim comes down to cut, quality of fabric and knowing what works for your body – not simply how many zeros are on the price tag. 

Yes, the Alaïa jeans are beautiful. But the quality is excellent, not exceptional. And this season, the High Street is doing a remarkably convincing impression of luxury denim for well under £50.

So if designer-looking denim is what you’re after, head straight to Uniqlo and save yourself £965.
